Armed Kidnappers Robbed, Stuffed Woman in Trunk, Prosecutor Says

New Hampshire resident, 71, kidnapped and robbed at gunpoint in Route 10 parking lot.

Two East Rutherford residents have been accused of carjacking and kidnapping a 71-year-old woman at gunpoint from a Parsippany parking lot before stuffing her in the trunk of her car, the Morris County Prosecutor's Office said.

Joseph Defreitas, 41, and Marilyn Nadeau, 52, were charged Thursday with kidnapping, robbery, carjacking, conspiracy and credit card theft. Defreitas was also charged with possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

According to a statement released Friday by Acting Morris County Prosecutor Fredric Knapp, a 71-year-old New Hampshire woman traveling home from a holiday visit with family in Mount Laurel became lost and stopped in a Route 10 parking lot on Dec. 29. The prosecutor's office did not indicate where on Route 10 the incident took place.

While attempting to get directions, the woman was approached by Defreitas and Nadeau, Knapp said. Defreitas brandished a handgun and forced the woman into his car, Knapp said. Nadeau followed in the victim's car to an ATM machine in Parsippany, Knapp said.

Defreitas demanded the woman reveal her personal identification number to complete the cash withdrawal, Knapp said. The woman complied and was then driven to a parking lot outside a Parsippany industrial building on Woodhollow Road, Knapp said.

Defreitas then stuffed the woman in the trunk of her car, Knapp said. The woman was later able to free herself and call for help, Knapp said.

After stealing the woman's purse, Defreitas and Nadeau used her credit cards at stores throughout North Jersey and New York, Knapp said.

Members of the Parsippany Police Department and Morris County Prosecutor's Office arrested Defreitas and Nadeau in East Rutherford on Thursday, Knapp said.

Bail was set at $500,000 for Defreitas and $300,000 for Nadeau, both without a 10 percent cash option, Knapp said. The pair was remanded to the Morris County Correctional Facility in lieu of bail.

Though this situation is horrible for the victim and her family IT IS NOT breaking news. It happened almost 3 weeks ago.

I wish The Patch would use that headline label more appropriately.

Fantastic job of the parsippany police who tracked down a career criminal over several states.. To some if you idiots, a crime does not get solved in an hour episode of csi.

Correct, Michelle. Some of these do take considerable crime to crack and then prove. They want the charges to stick, after all.

The ppd is unable to take all the credit as report by the ppd. Star Ledger: In a joint statement, Knapp and DeZenzo thanked the Morris County Sheriff's Office, police departments from East Rutherford, Trenton and Woodland Park, as well as the New Jersey State Police and Connecticut law enforcement authorities for help during the investigation. Nice try though.

Seems like these two left this lady for dead. Left in a parking lot during the end of the holidays when the company wouldn't open back for business until after New Years. So maybe they were building a case against these two.

Why do the police get bashed here? They did not rob and kidnap the woman. Perhaps we did not hear about it because they didn't wAnt to tip off the thieves. Once our media gets hold of a story there are no rules And sometimes less common sense.

To the person making the comment about crime not getting resolved like CSI, you are absolutely correct. However, when there are ATM surveillance photos and retail video of where the lowlifes used the credit cards, it makes this one a no-brainer. A child could have solved this crime.

Just because they used CC and atm doesnt mean it solved in an hour..gotta build a case..track them..probably not these two criminals first rodeo...again another great job by all law enforcement officers

Really? I didn't realize it was so easy to look at a tape of a man and woman and know instantly who and where they are in the country . Maybe we can just ask the guy who was in jail for 20 years to please confess and he would sweetly oblige too??

There is a prior conviction, correct? So the photo gets run against a digital database, now you have a name. This isn't rocket science. Now if they solve the burglaries in town, then I'll join in on the praise. This one was handed to them.

you just could not be more wrong. a fuzzy video does not identify anyone. Running photos against a digital database? are you serious? facial recognition technology? perhaps they could've checked the driver's seat for remnants of criminal flatulence and put the cloth fibers through a magical gas detector, then cross referenced the DNA through the FBI...seriously, you have no idea what you're talking about. This was an intense investigation and it bore fruit. Go hate cops somewhere else.

Fullwater, you're absolutley correct. However, to be fair, it's not the PPD patting themselves. It's the bizarre, hero-worshipping, attention-starved groupies that come out of the woodwork each time they do a routine job. When sanitation takes my garbage should I post what a great event has just been witnessed?? This was all part of the job they signed up for.

I like how people think that it is so easy, "a no brainer", to capture a criminal in this day and age because of technology. If that was the case, there should be barely any crimes with fear that the criminal will be caught within 29 to 31 mins (average time of an episode of CSI minus commercials). It is also nice to see how people condemn the police department when they don't catch someone (burglaries) and when they actually do catch someone they are also condemned because it took longer then 1 episode (another CSI reference because that person who stated that was dead on). It's as if they are damned either way.
As for the people on here saying Parsippany is like Camden and such, move, no one is keeping you in Parsippany. It's the same nonsense that is in a majority of patch articles... "Parsippany is horrible...", "...the board of ed is horrible", "cops in Parsippany suck...", "taxes are way too high..." --- Just move, you don't have to live here if it is such a horrible town to live in. I am sure the other "promiselandtown.patch" people will love to hear your positive thoughts and comments!

I'd like to know where this occurred. I have a mom the victims age. I thought this town is a great place to live (rank 16). Good job to PPD. But if we're getting whole foods here, our streets, parking lots need to be safer. More traffic, more people= more chaos. I hope the victim is better now. Hopefully family gets her a GPS.

Oh, my bad, apologies. Each time I deal with you guys who spell it "PH" it makes me think you're a girl. I decline your offer of whatever criminality you have i.n mind. I don't dirty my hands on uneducated sots like you. Do yourself a favor, go to the library and read up on the constitution. I have every right to be critical of all our branches of gov. The aggression you show when differing on an opinion can be either your immaturity or your obvious self-frustration on the inadequacies in your life. Maybe you're a cop wannabee who keeps getting passed over, maybe you're tired of renting and not owning, whatever is bothering you, its important to identify the root. I strongly urge counseling for you. Whatever I can do to help, friend. I'll even come over and clean the Jon and Ponch poster you still have hanging.

Why dont you post your name and where your from? someones a little scared :) Just another internet tough guy. hahahahaha, oh and by the way im a college student pursuing a lucrative degree, if you want to go down personal roads, we can go down them. Granted you'll never put any information on here that would allow people to find out who you really are, because you must be so ashamed. :) Oh and i never said you didnt have the right to do or say or opinionize in whichever way you please, just simply stating that its pathetic. Good luck in college. Hit those library resources, your grammar needs some tweaking. Other than that, I hope you don't wind up at the next OWS. Remember, the future looks very, very bleak for college graduates. Shame us old guys left such a mess for you. But alas, the 80's were very good to me, with all our borrowing and defaulting. Life is still good, and thanks for picking up my tab. Good day, friend.

I'm not worried about my future, it's looking pretty good. I've got great credit, a beautiful girlfriend of 6 years, and get straight A's. I'm not exactly sure what tab of yours i personally am picking up... your mindless banter is boring me, im sure you'll respond to this again but i most certainly won't be considering i have much more important things to be doing than sitting on a computer whining at people all day :) Have a great existence buddy ol' pal!
