Cops Had Right to Shoot Bear, State Says
A bear cub was euthanized alongside I-80 after it was hit by a driver Sunday.
The state trooper who killed a bear cub that had been hit by a car on Interstate 80 West in Parsippany Sunday was within his legal rights to do the act, according to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. DEP spokesperson Larry Rangonese, in a Daily Record report, said that police have the authority to take discretionary action when an emergency situation calls for it. A Ridgefield Park resident struck the bear early Sunday morning. The driver was not hurt and State Police say no charges were filed against her. The bear cub, who police said had to be put down, will be used for research.

Why does this even make the news ? You'll trust the judgement of a law-enforcement officer to shoot or not shoot a PERSON, why should you question his/her judgement with respect to a bear ?

We'd report on a person being shot as well. Listen, I understand that you may not care about this or consider this news, but there are many more people out there with varying views of what is important. Some of them DO find this story newsworthy. We aim to serve as many of our disparate readers as we can.

I can't believe i did not hear about this before logging into patch. Why is it not covered in any of the major national news outlets? Pete, if you have a heart you will sign the petition to join PETA in memorializing fish killed in a crash in California on Oct 11. Natalie, thank you for reporting on this!
