FDU Poll: Obama's Popularity Rebounds in NJ
Favorable rating a change from previous polls.
As Republicans continue to duke it out for the GOP presidential nomination, New Jersey voters are split on President Obama's job evaluation, according to the latest recent statewide poll by Fairleigh Dickinson University's PublicMind.
According to the FDU poll, 46 percent of Garden State voters approve of the job Obama is doing as president while 45 percent disapprove—a reversal, albeit barely, of two previous polls in which the majority of voters didn't give his performance a thumbs-up.
Also, more voters said they were optimistic about the country's direction. 28 percent said the country is taking the right path—a jump of six points—while 61 percent still believe the U.S. is on "the wrong track."
Read the release below for more and take our poll.
New Jersey voters split on President Obama’s job evaluation: 46% approving to 45% disapproving. According to the most recent statewide poll by Fairleigh Dickinson University’s PublicMindTM, Obama’s one-point advantage is an improvement from two previous three-point deficits (44%-47%). However, the president has a deficit of eight percentage points among men (40-48) compared to an advantage of nine points among women (51-42).
Some voters are now more optimistic about the direction of the country: 28% say the country is headed in the right direction, an uptick of six points. And there is a corresponding six-point drop, to 61%, in those saying the country is on the “wrong track.” The shift is accounted for almost entirely by Democrats. Democrats, by a margin of 47%-40%, say the country is headed in the right direction, a significant change from the previous measure when many more Democrats (49%) said the country was on the wrong track than said it was headed in the right direction (36%). Republicans continue to agree overwhelmingly (87%-6%) that the country is on the wrong track.
“Democrats are eager to note any improvements in the economy,” said Peter Woolley, a political scientist and director of the poll. He added, “Given the intense criticism by Republicans of their own candidates for the presidency, Democrats are feeling Obama’s chances of re-election have improved.”
Democratic U.S. Senator Robert Menendez, who shares the president’s election cycle in 2012, defeats two possible Republican challengers in hypothetical match- ups. He beats state Sen. Joe Kyrillos by 43%-31%, and defeats Tea Partier Anna Little by the exact same margin, 43%-31%.
“Without Tom Kean, Jr., the Republicans right now have only the equivalent of generic candidates—not well enough known statewide to have a brand name,” said Woolley. “That’s the difficulty of having so few statewide elected offices. Challengers typically must struggle for name recognition.”
The Fairleigh Dickinson University poll of 800 registered voters statewide was conducted by telephone using both landlines and cell phones from Jan. 2 through Jan. 8, 2012, and has a margin of error of +/-3.5 percentage points.

Obama is a Usurper and Illegal/Unveted POTUS and should be arrested on the grounds of Perjury, Treason and Sedition for all his anti-American acts and Legislation and all his violations of the Constitution.

Well you rare notbproviding any to support your views, but I will. First let's look at President Clinton. He had a Republican congress led by Newt G. President Clinton led and was able to broker compromises to help the economy. Another example is President Reagan who had a democratic congress led by Tip O'Neil. President Reagan led and made compromises to move the country forward. Now let's look at current Governor of NY, Gov Cuomo, he has a very difficult state senate and very difunctional. Gov Cuomo is a leader and he was able to close the budget deficit, raise taxes on people making over 2mm etc. I am choosing leaders on both sides of the aisle as they are leaders getting things done. Obama and his team have little to no leadership skills and they have failed the American people with policies that have extended the economic downturn and in their denial of their inept performance the create a populous class warfare and divide our nation. Obama is not and he cannot have a second term or the nation will be in peril economically, socially and forget his foreign policy messes related to Afganistan, Pakistan, Iran and Israel !!

Neither Reagan or Clinton faced what this President has had to face. The current Republican majority with it's uncompromising Tea Party base doesn't give a darn about the general welfare of the bulk of Americans or the middleclass who are rapidly decending into poverty. They have launched a full scale war against the very foundation of what built up the middleclass from the end of WW2 until the socalled Reagan Revolution. That was government intervention in the form of things like the GI BIll, Medicare, the Civil Rights legislation, the Interstate highway program. They lied us into wars that could not be won and gave Greed a new and stronger lease on life in Wall St. products that kill jobs and growth.

Actually, there are no surprises here. Madison Patch's unscientific poll is anti-Obama, hardly a surprise in a GOP town. According to FDU's scientific poll (and FDU has a pretty good track record for accuracy), Obama is still reasonably popular statewide. Again, no surprise there, since he won NJ handily in '08 and is almost certain to do so next year. No one is enthused about Menendez, but no top Republican wants to take him on. The two GOP candidates are, respectively, a dimwit and a nutcase. I'd suggest that Republicans stop killing the messenger and start focusing on how to recruit better candidates.

Tania, facts are that the unemployment is has remained at 9 percent and higher under Obama. The hard core unemployment is closer to 14 to 15 percent. The budget deficit has sky rocketed under Obama. Fact Iran is closer then ever before to having a nuclear weapon. Fact the war in Afganistan has done little to nothing and we have lost treasure of soldiers lives, limb and we spent money we borrowed from China. The lack of tax policy changes and constant threats against evil corporate America has caused such uncertainty that businesses are not hiring, again a cause of high unemployment. Why in your arrogance do you discount looking at others like Govenor Cuomo and President Clinton who show leadership today and in the past, and are a stark reminder that Obama lacks leadership skills required to be President. Another fact is gasoline prices have never been higher than under Obama. His lack of a coherent energy policy is hurting everyone at the pump. You think Obama can run against Bush's policies? Think again. Obama said when he ran and I fell for his rhetoric that if unemployment was as high as it is today then he should not be re elected. That I agree with him on. Obama has tripled the deficit Bush had, and he has divided the country through class war fare, pitting Americans against Americans. He is the most divisive political figure in recent history. We need jobs and natural gas is in abundance to help us out of our energy crisis. Many of us independents voted for Obama because we saw that Bush failed miserably. Now Obama has failed and he will not be re elected. Bush borrowed from China to fight a war and Obama (change we can believe in) did the very same thing Afganisatan.
Corporations create jobs, and if the government creates a hostile environment due to regulations and taxes and political rhetoric, then they create jobs elsewhere. Obama's lack of policies, leadership, and negative and divisive rhetoric has killed our recovery and millions of Americans suffer jobless. His Presidency is an utter failure.

Obama is the father of the Tea Party. His socialist agenda gave the fuel to create such a group. Obama is the father of OWS due to his class warfare rhetoric and bailout policies. The recession has it's roots from the Clinton Administration, which forced lower credit scores for mortgages on Freddie and fannie and the banks. the Clinton administration wanted more Americans to own homes and the American dream. It was a huge error. Then Clinton and Bush failed to regulate the derivative markets and the wall street wizards bundled the mortgages in derivative intruments that when the housing markets feel in value the mortgages were underwater with owners who should not have qualified for a mortgage. Now the other impact on our economy and credit liquidity was 9/11 which both Clinton and Bush failed to see the danger of Osama. You are a democrat partisan and it's sad because you cannot see past the partisan nonsense and think like an American. Obama has faced mindless, obstructionist politicos who refuse to compromise for the good of the country. We have never actually seen what Obama's policies could do to help this country. We HAVE SEEN what ‘bought’ politicians can do.
I have grave concerns about our legislators (Congressmen) who take an oath (thank you, Grover Norquist) that they will not raise taxes (on the rich) prior to running for office. They are elected or reelected, on funding that is a trade-off for being bought to serve the interests of the Super Rich and international corporate interests. Their oath of office, to faithfully serve their constituents and the interests of their country, is a sham when they act in lock-step to serve their rich campaign financiers and put us on the brink of bankruptcy.
During the Eisenhower years, the tax rate on the rich was 90%. Yes, 90%. The country thrived. People were educated with public funds. Public works that provided infrastructure for our way of life were evident throughout the country, providing many jobs for many workers. The middle class thrived along with the wealthy.
We had these tax cuts during the Bush years… and jobs disappeared for the middle class. Trickle down doesn’t work and only serves to make the rich richer, and better able to buy off our politicians.

It's time for real leadership in the White House and this is a one term President thank goodness.
C. Springwater
4:42 am on Sunday, January 15, 2012
Let me clarify. I have not suggested nor am I suggesting we return to a 90% tax rate, but the Bush tax cuts for the rich have not created jobs here in America.
In the previous comment the word 'socialism' was used to trigger negative emotional responses to the concept of supporting national programs geared to meet nation-wide needs for healthcare and the building and maintenance of infrastructure.
Our country has a long history of providing funding for infrastructure that would not otherwise be built. The transcontinental railroad and our interstate highway system are examples of these types of federally funded ventures.
It all comes down to quality of life and what we want our country to be like to live in. I want to see us work together to build a better America for ALL Americans, not just the richer amongst us. The rich will also benefit from that 'better' America.
Debate has not been possible because a body of politicians have already made up their minds based upon oaths made prior to coming to office. Intransigence leaves no room for discussion. You cannot fault Obama for their deliberately uncooperative stance.

The Bush tax cuts are not at faultbfor the lack of job creation. Everyone agrees we need to raise taxes, the issue is when it can be done. In Pres Clinton's new book he concludes correctly thatbtaxes cannot be raised until the economy starts expanding. Obama does not get this. Now why are there no jobs being created? The answer is poor tax policies that encourage companies to create jobs overseas. This is the fault of both parties. Companies move their operations to low tax and wage countries. We have the highest corporate tax rate so companies go overseas to make stuff and if those profits remain permanently overseas they are never taxed in the USA. This is why companies pay low effective tax rates in the USA. It's all legal and our congress write the tax laws that encourage job creation overseas. If the profits were remitted into the USA then companies would pay a 30% tax on those profits. That is so high it causes companies to keep the money overseas and they then invest in manufacturing overseas thus jobs in china, russia, europe etc. We need tax policies that encourage job creation in the USA and we need low tax and regulatory costs to allow American workers to compete with low wage workers in emerging countries. So let's all stop the partisan rhetoric about trickle down this and that and Bush tax cuts are at fault and on and on. We need real reform or I am afraid for our country.

But, Reagan cut the overall income tax rates across the board, which more than made up for the loss in deductions. You're on the wrong side of the issue because your suggesting that Congressional Conservatives capitulate to Obama-Reid-and Pelosi's agenda. Which goes against supply side principes.
The problem is not with house Republicans, it's with Senate Repulicans who are unwilling to fight for tax cuts. So now the media story line is the house Republicans must compromise. Wrong, in 1995, Bill Clinton rightly compromised and signed welfare reform and tax cuts and balanced the budget.Clinton was rewarded with a second term.. The strategy Clinton embraced was called triangulation. Obama isn't capable of triangulation because he is an ideologue.

The GOP blames Obama for his "it could be worse" approach when actually under GOP IT WOULD BE WORSE.........ALOT WORSE. But at least we'll be able to sleep at night , knowing a woman on the other side of the country won't be having an abortion.

I do not where to begin. Your rant is so uninformed. The ecomomic mess is the fault of both parties. Obama is president and his inability to lead is the issue. Companies are not hiring because of obama's continued threats of tax increases which causes uncertainty and uncertainty creates a climate of let's not do any hiring until we know what the tax policies will be.

Well Mr Informed (Concerned).....please inform me on exactly which tax policy of Obamas is making people use Netflix over going to Blockbuster?

Obama is still extremely popular with the convicted felons, the illegal immigrants, and the deceased. These three groups will carry the state of New Jersey for him in the general elections. That's why we cannot allow to disenfranchise these important population segments by introducing any form of voter ID. It is a well known fact that urban minorities never lie or commit election fraud; thinking otherwise is an extreme form of racism that must be condemned.

Scott,
Your netflix vs blockbuster point was one that was so uninformed I did not address it. But since you have asked I will do so. The decline of blockbuster is not due ton the government. Its due to poor management by blockbuster. Netflix has a better business model than blockbuster. It's that simple. Blockbuster was too slow to change and did not embrace changing technologies. So they lose. Perhapsnto save jobs at blockbuster Obama should bail them out so they can continue their failed business model and inept management be rewarded at the tax payees expense.

There should have been no bailouts at all, this is the apathy of letting everyone tap the taxpayer till they bleed! Try being responsible businessmen, accept your failures and press on...stop having other people solve your bad decisions in business. Grow a pair and be Men!

At its peak Blockbuster had 60,000 employees. Netflix has just under 3,000.........that's a 57,000 employee gap.......and you think this has to do with poor management
Even if they were quicker to adapt to technologies and succeed, the company would be doing good......but THEY WOULD STILL be closing a ton of unneeded stores and firing a large group if employees
You still have yet to mention which policy of obamas is causing this to happen to all kinds of industries out there.
You are right.........the fall of blockbuster is NOT due to government".....which means you AGREE with my initial argument

Unemploymentnis complex and driven by many factors. Yes technological advances cause some companies to fail while other strive. Blockbusters, Borders and Barnes and Nobles are recent examples of companies whose management teams failed to adapt. Then there is what we have today, a president who creates a hostile environment for businesses and they react by freezing hiring because of the unknown policies that will be proposed if Obama wins another term. Obama is a polarizing president and not a leader.

And the BAILOUT of companies was a BUSH AGENDA in 2008. OBAMA did the STIMULUS
Those are two very distinct different spending bills

Semantics, Obama's Stimulus was a bailout for municipal workers and union. It was misdirected and did nothing to spur the economy

To Dan Grant, Reagan faced far more than OBama! Interest rates were close to 20 % and the upper tax rate was 70%! we had just been humiliated by the Iran hostage tragedy which went on forever. Reagan restored the economy and he treated the democratic controlled congress with respect, unlike what Obama did during the first two years in office when democrats controlled the white house and the congress. Obama, Pelosi and Reid ramed through the healthcare bill and other legislation without proper debate.
Obama is the father of the tea party extremists as he caused such a political divide it provided the Tea Party a great deal of emotion to organize and get us to the stalemate we have today. Reagan worked with Tip O'Neil and as a statesman made compromises as needed. He tried to getbthe democrats to cut spending and when they would not he, after cutting taxes significantly, he raised taxes and levies in today's dollars approximate 300 billion, because the deficit reached 6 % of GDP. All of this was done because Reagan was a leader and he worked across the aisle and did not divide the country as Obama has done. I see younarena local democratic politician and thank you for your service. Please no revisionist history and let's get Obama out of office as he does not have the skills to be President.

Are you telling be the country wasn't divided in 2000, when the democratic/republican wasn't almost evenly split??? And it wasn't Bush who brought the country together, it was a bunch of extremist flying airplanes into buildings that did that.
And the GOP was divided long before Obama came along. What the far right is saying about Romney now is exactly what they said about McCain in 2008. If Romney gets the nomination, then they'll spend the rest of the year praising how great a choice he will be, and if should happen to lose to Obama, they'll immediately turn face and say that's what we get for nominating such a loser. Exactly what happened to McCain.

Obama saved us from deep depresion. Revived the economy in barely two years and huge corportations were saved from certain bankruptcy and millions of lay offs. Ever thought of GM and Chrysler... Bush pushed the Dow to 7000 now its at 12500. What more quantifiable proof is needed? If McCain had won we would have been having a war with China by invading North Korea whie still deepening the depression. Unemloyment rate would have been 19% instead of GOP could continue with Bush for 4 more years! New Jersey is recovering because of Obama despite Christie's recklessness!

Mr. Wasim Khan, if we hadn't elected Obama we would have already exterminate all terrorists, had a GDP grows of 20% a year, dropped crime levels to zero, and found a cure for cancer, AIDS, and blatant lying. The latter would, of course, make both our posts impossible...

Your crystal ball is broken, probably partisan cool aid spilled on it! The depression was averted before Obama came to office. It was brought on by democrats and republicans. It first began under Clinton when his administration forced Freddie and fanny to lower credit standards to obtain mortgages because Clinton felt how ownership was a right of the American dream. Then people were approved for mortages theybshould not of been approved for. Then the wall street crowd bundled these junk mortgages into derivative instruments and got AIG to insure them. All of them. Clinton and Bush failed to regulate these new financial instruments and it became an unregulated casino. Housing prices dropped and mortgages went bad, then housing prices fell further as credit tightened. The the credit crunch took out Lehman and all hell broke lose. Obama took over and had to work to mend the economy, instead he saw the democrats had control of both houses and so he made Obamacare his number one priority and he put thru stimulus packages aimed to help municipal workers/unions. The healthcare bill but a huge burden on the future outlook of the deficit and businesses view of long term growth. The supreme court this summer will rule it unconstitutional as it violates states rights. Obama then began his class warfare rhetoric and divided the country to where we are today...a mess. Hard core unemployment is at 15 to17% and Obama has failed miserably.
