Hurricane Irene: Mayor, Police Release Flood Warning

In Reverse 9-1-1 message township will send, authorities suggest recipients consider voluntary evacuation.

A Reverse 9-1-1 Alert from the Parsippany Police Department and the office of Mayor James Barberio suggests residents who receive it "seek an alternative place to stay during the hours of the storm in an area not prone to flooding."

The message reads: "We are anticipating an amount of flooding in your neighborhood that may potentially be more severe than any flooding that we have ever experienced. Our area will be hit with an unprecedented storm within the next 24 hours which will include lightning, high winds and up to 10 inches of rain. Low-lying areas as well as areas in close proximity to them are expected to flood as bodies of water swell and overflow. There is also a chance that the Rockaway River may exceed the capacity that the floodwall was designed to hold.

"While there are no mandatory evacuations occurring at this time, we believe it may be prudent for you to seek an alternative place to stay during the hours of the storm in an area not prone to flooding. We would also ask that you park your vehicle in an area not prone to flooding so that in the event that you may have to leave you residence, your car will not be damaged. More information will be released in the hours leading up to and throughout the storm. Please only call 9-1-1 for true emergencies."

In an earlier release, Mayor Barberio identified these sites as the township's likely areas of impact: New Road residences, businesses and apartment complexes including Partridge Run and Rutgers Village; Lower Edwards and South Edwards roads; the Rockaway Neck section of the township and lower Lake Hiawatha.
