It's Official: Barberio Launches Re-Election Campaign

The mayor will run for another four years on a ticket including council incumbent Vincent Ferrara and newcomer Milin Shah.

Mayor James Barberio kicked off his re-election effort at a kickoff and fundraising event at the Sheraton Hotel Thursday evening.

A large crowd of well-wishers and dignitaries were on hand to lend their support as Barberio announced a campaign ticket including Council Vice President Vincent Ferrara, who is running for re-election, and challenger Milin Shah.

"Our campaign theme is all about moving Parsippany forward," said Barberio.

The slate will face the opposing team of mayoral candidate Paul Carifi Jr., Louis Valori and Robert J. Peluso in the June 4 Republican Party primary election.

"I've been mayor for the past four years, and I believe I have been very successful as the mayor," Barberio said. "I've brought debt service down by $1.9 million, I've reduced legal fees by $220,000, insurance fees by $314,000. I'm continually decreasing our expenses in town while maintaining services in the township of Parsippany-Troy Hills."

"I'm humbled and excited to be standing here as a council candidate on the mayor's re-election ticket and alongside Councilman Ferrara," said Shah, who spoke of his move from the Democratic to the Republican party, where he said his values align, and how he has been a Barberio supporter since 2009.

"To be honest, I wasn't expecting the mayor to ask me to run with him, but he sat me down and said, 'Milin, Parsippany’s council needs a fresh perspective, Parsippany needs new energy and Parsippany needs another leader who will always put Parsippany first,'" he said. "I was sold."

The ticket hopes Parsippany residents will be sold as well. The platform covers keeping taxes low while maintaining essential services and growing economic development in the township, as noted by Ferrara.

"My running mates and I promise you that we will work tirelessly to ensure that Parsippany-Troy Hills remains a great place to live, work and play," he said. "When re-elected, I will continue to work with the mayor to find new and innovative ways to do more with less. We will re-examine possible shared service arrangements with other towns. We will keep taxes low, but maintain the reasonable and necessary services all citizens expect from local government.

"We also want to facilitate preservation and improvement of what I term the 'Parsippany Way of Life'… to ensure that our children, as well as our senior citizens, will be able to afford to continue to live here."

Which, as the mayor said, is what is at the heart of his re-election effort.

"My commitment to the community is far and beyond [politics and numbers]—I love Parsippany," he said. "Parsippany is in my blood. I know I can keep it moving forward.

"Parsippany is on the right track. How do I know that? Because we're the number one place to live in New Jersey."

Barberio has netted the endorsements of 26th District state Sen. Joseph Pennacchio, Asw. BettyLou DeCroce and Asm. Jay Webber.

Dignitaries in attendance at the campaign kickoff included Sen. Pennacchio, U.S. Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen, Freeholder Ann Grossi, Councilman Michael J. dePierro, Police Chief Anthony DeZenzo, Deputy Chief Paul Philipps, Indian-American Liaison Jigar Shah, former Board of Education member Frank Neglia, former Mayor Joseph Weisberg, Zoning Board of Adjustment member Amil Shah and Planning Board members Steve Cappadonna, Steve Dinsmore, Brian Kelley and George Kimmey.

Upon learning that Councilman Vincent Ferrara is running for re-election on the Parsippany Troy-Hills Town Council, I immediately reference the definition of a leader. A leader is an individual who sets aside personal desires in order to create a more progressive society. When I think of Councilmen Ferrara, this definition does not even come close to how he has acted during his term as town councilman. I will say that I voted for him as well as Mayor Barberio and Councilman Brian Stanton in the previous election and I am disappointed in myself for putting my vote, as well as my trust and support, in a man who is the antithesis of a leader.

I had a lot of uncomplementary things to say about this ineffective and ethically-challenged Mayor and his cousin Vinny, but Tim Berrios said it all so eloquently. I couldn't top that if I tried. Nice job Mr. Berrios.

Parsippany should reject this ticket early and often.

The Mayor and his running mates lost my vote when Barberio threw his support behind the Waterview/Whole Foods project. He's given the developer free reign in rewriting the zoning of that property, to the detriment of the community.

According to Milan Shah, Mayer Barberio sat him down and told him that Parsippany's Council needs "a fresh perspective" and Parsippany needs "new energy" and Parsippany needs "another leader who will always put Parsippany first"
Exactly and I couldn't agree with the Mayor more and if he is true to the words he shared with Mr. Shah then why are the Mayor and Mr. Ferrara running again? And what was Mr. Shah sold by the Mayor? Sounds like a bill of goods that Parsippany residents aren't about to buy next November.
Time to put your resume together Mr. Mayor. In today's job market it may take you longer than you think to find another job.

The Mayor says he is continually decreasing the towns expences, but what about the taxpayers? The taxpayers are picking up the balance of everything else. We are being screwed on our sewer and water bills and our taxes could be dealt with and lowered, but he still isn't doing or saying anything about that. It can be done Mayor, why don't you do it? Whats in it for you?

Of course Milin, as you said in the article: "To be honest, I wasn't expecting the mayor to ask me to run with him" -- that is because the mayor was never going to ask you to run with him UNTIL he faced a formidable primary challenge and realized he has done nothing for the welfare and benefit of the township.

Mayor Barberio,

I would like to know if you are going to send council canidate Vinnie Ferrara to Anti Bullying school? I'm sure you know what I'm talking about? Well let me refresh your memory concerning Vinnie Ferrara's bullying behavior towards children while their playing soccer and to the other coaches. I am very sure that you are aware of his inapropriate behavior towards our children and you allowed him to get away with it. Your poor leadership allowed his bevaior to get out of control and his abuse continued. Just some of the incidents are him yelling terrible comments to a young girl while she is playing soccer. Other comments are him saying that he has to many Indian girls on his soccer team. I know you are aware of this along with your liason officer Councilmen Brian Stanton, but you allowed this abuse to continue. The coverup of these disturbing incidents has been regularly ensured by Ferrara's continued threats of unleashing his and the mayor's political influence and furor on the soccer club. Mayor you are shameful and are apart of this abuse. What would be great is for Natalie Davis and other reporters to start peeling back the layer of the onion inorder to reveal the truth about Vinnie Ferrara's. Mayor I wish you would only be honest with youself and stop the abuses of Vinnie Ferrara.

What was the bullying behavior?

Has any reporter interviewed the children or the coaches?

you stated, him yelling terrible comments to a young girl while she is playing soccer.
and him saying that he has to many Indian girls on his soccer team.

Who overheard these comments?

Why doesn't anyone want to go on record to substantiate your comments?

Mayor,

To educate you further on your lack of knowledge of the NJ Anti Bullying laws:

Bullying is the use of force or coercion to abuse or intimidate others. The behavior can be habitual and involve an imbalance of social or physical power. It can include verbal harassment or threat, physical assault or coercion and may be directed repeatedly towards particular victims, perhaps on grounds of race, religion, gender, sexuality, or ability.[2][3] If bullying is done by a group, it is called mobbing. The victim of bullying is sometimes referred to as a "target

Do these guys have criminal records they sound bad. I was told this Ferrera yelled at a senior citizen over the water view project. Is it true that the Mayor has only a GED and worked in the town and filed a fraudulent workers comp claim? If he did and someone had the micro film its on and made copies of it that would be bad for the Mayor but good for the town to know. How about the other work history of the Mayor was he involved in any litigation that accused him of embezelment? That would be bad for the Mayor but also good for the town to know. Do you think the Mayor will tell the people about the special "agangement" he has with the town attorney? Why do we pay a Mayor $110,000 family health insurance at $ 17,600 and a car and gas at $ 14,450 for around $ 145,000 these candidates should pledge to cut their pay by at least $45,000. Lets bring back Luther or support this Nelson as Mayor!

Also look at sewer surplus he is holding our money for the last two years so he can give it back as a campaign gimmick. How about the clerk who was paid off 250,000 get the records and they show he caused the problems by his inability to lead and resolve personal issues. If he gets re elected I'm moving out I can't afford it anymore ill vote for the democrat candidate.

And Nelson looks like a spotted deer in headlights at council meetings when real decisions need to be made. He had to abstain from the occupancy ordinance for Pete's sake. I don't care what his excuse is to the Patch, real leaders need to make real decisions.

But Lu Lu you are right -- this mayor and his pal Vinny the bully need to be dumped.

And Natalie, just because you haven't been able to get anyone on the record about the soccer fiasco doesn't mean a story is not there. Investigate deep enough and you will have no problem finding someone who will talk and/or enough supportive facts to form blow this case wide open.

The Mayor has failed the town and needs to resign. Here are the following reasons that he must resign:

1.The Chiefs payout of over $500,000 of the taxpayers money that the Mayor negotiated.
2.Attorney fees of over $1,000,000 a year that continues to spiral out of control.
3.$250.000 payout for a clerk that sued and worked only four months. All because of the Mayors horrible leadership.
4.Vacant commercial office space thats costing the town millions in rateables.
5.There is approximately 30 police officer short on the police department but the 6.The Mayor continues to make promotions at the expense of the taxpayers
7.Nepotisim jobs for family members and friends
8.Taxes continue to increase
9.Crime has increased in the town
10. The Mayor handled the flood and snowstorm so poorly
11. Appoints Jigger Shah as his Indian liason officer who is the same Jigger Shah that was investigated/questioned for absentee ballot fraud.

The Mayor although it seems he has not had a great 3 and 1/2 years he could pull it all together by the November election. This is a fight he has to win if not what will he do? I think he only has a GED and his work history is not so great. He must win at all costs and will do what it takes to win. He will say that PTH is the number 1 town in the State and take credit for it he will say he re built Lower Lake Hiawatha and has developed a new plan the "new fields of Dreams" he has lowered taxes he has increased services tried to bring in new business (waterview) and no one will question him because they are to busy trying to

feed their families and pay taxes. The only one that can stop him or questions him is Mr. Nelson.

Michael M

11:45 pm on Friday, February 22, 2013

Oh stop it LuLu, Nelson is not the lone wolf. He is just a wolf that can't howl. You need to follow these township council meetings more carefully.

There is another councilmember who is not drinking the Kool-Aid of the keystone cop council lead by the incompetent Barberio and his trusty teleprompter, a/k/a the township attorney. See the Mayor has a deficiency in thinking, speaking and leading independently so he needs his teleprompter. Look at the council meeting footage, it is hilariously disturbing.

At least Carifi has the guts to vote consistent to his spoken position whether the keystone cop, township attorney rubberstamp council -- Barberio, Ferrara, Stanton and dePierro -- like it or not.

Nelson needs to lead with action and not just rhetoric. He has been given the chance by being voted on the council. Now he need to walk the walk and lead instead of explaining himself around his inaction.

I believe that we the taxpayers of Parsippany should also be taking a hard look at the history of John Ingelisino who was the former Mayor of Rockaway Township where he was voted out of town. He was also a Freeholder and was voted out. There were also many allegations of his conduct that the public needs to research. I am confident with Natalie's expertise and proficiency in investigative reporting, enough evidence will be secured quickly.

It is a different time today than four years ago. As election nears, it is a time when residents are closely assessing how useless, unproductive, unaccountable, abusive and corrupt this administration has been these last four years. And the public is seeing what little good has been done and how much damage - in just four years - has been inflicted on this township. Hey "TruthSeeker", or let's cut to the chase-- Hey Milin Shah, pay attention cause this is gonna hurt.

Sounds like you got problems with the police department getting their education paid for by the taxpayers of Parsippany. But it is this asleep-behind-the-wheel mayor you should be lamenting.

TruthSeeker, Milin, you should be incensed, irate, ashamed and appalled to know THIS MAYOR has done absolutely NOTHING to bring about reform to these contracts while in office. Currently, police officers' contracts cover education reimbursements for college degrees up to and including a doctorate.

Please allow me to continue your list of some of the police officer/beneficiaries of this out-of-control contract perk with no help from this compromised mayor to put a stop to it. In fact, Barberio let it remain in his buddies DeZenzo’s contract while taxpayers Barberio claims to serve are having difficulty paying for their own childrens' colleges.

Also of note, this mayor hasn't even attempted to reform contracts -- it remained in his buddy DeZenzo's contract. Here are other highlights:

Town paid for Chief Peckerman to get his law degree.
Town paid for Chief DeZenzo's graduate degree
Town paid for Captain Jeffrey Storm's graduate degree

The Mayor has done so much, but he still hasn't lowered the sewer and water bills to where they should be instead of over charging us every quarter. He is padding an account to use for whatever he wants anytime and he still has done anything to lower our property taxes either. It can be done, and I told him how one time when he came to my house, but he still doesn't want to help the taxpayers in this town.

Take care of the seniors and the seniors will take care of you for amny years to come, but this town hasn't learned that. I came here 32 years ago from a town that had the lowest tax rates in the county and the Mayor was re-elected and in office for 20 years when I left the town to move here. This town doesn't care about their seniors. Like they said once before, If the seniors can't afford to live here then they should go someplace where they would be more comfortable. Many of the seniors here helped build this town to what it is and now you want to throw them out. What a poor town, has no respect for the taxpayers, without them you have no money to run this place. Maybe you should go back to whatever town you left that had such great tax rates if that's the only thing you care about. We don't need seniors that bitch and whine about their taxes, ok? We need people that understand that a strong school system is the key to high property values and a safe community. If you don't want to pay for schools, then please do move somewhere like Florida or Alabama where they pay nothing in taxes and have crap schools. We don't care if you built Par High and the Hills with your bare hands in two feet of snow uphill both ways without even a sandwich and a glass of water to eat because it was the Depression and all you had was mud. We really don't. And we don't care that you were in Vietnam (though I doubt you were, because I'm pretty sure you're really Mike Strumolo and not Paul Brown), we don't care if you drove a bus, we don't care that you hate Democrats or Obama or any of the other crap you ramble on about on two month old posts. We really don't. All we care about is that our kids will get the best education, if you have no interest in that and only worry about your Social Security check, please go away. Far away. Because you're not part of this community, you're just a bitter angry whiny old man who contributes nothing and makes everyone miserable as he waits to die. Hurry up.

What, exactly, have you built, anyway? Name me one thing you contributed to this community, Paul Brown. Show me one. Or have you spent your 32 years here bitching and complaining about tax increases and school spending? Just go away.
