In the race for President of the United States, influential New Jersey political insiders say Republicans may benefit from a projected down voter turnout after Tropical Storm Sandy left much of the state without power through Tuesday.
According to surveys issued to political officials and influencers Monday, respondents from both sides of the aisle believe the storm will have an impact on how many voters head to the polls to vote in the general election.
In 2008, the majority of Parsippany voters chose a Democratic candidate for president, according to the New Jersey Department of State. In the township, 12,219 voters chose Barack Obama and 11,091 voters chose John McCain. New Jersey, overall, has favored a Democratic candidate in the past five presidential elections.
According to Monday's survey, voters from both parties agreed that Republicans would benefit from fewer voters visiting polls Tuesday.
Polls will open at 6 a.m. during the election and remain open until 8 p.m. For a full list of polling locations, click here.
Here's a list of candidates (click on the names to read profiles) you will be able to vote for at the polls and the races they are in:
- Parsippany Township Council: Vying for a one-year unexpired term seat, Democrat Jonathan Nelson, the anti-rubber-stamp challenger, faces the mayor's choice, Republican Judy Tiedemann, who wants to maintain her party's grip on every elected office in town.
- Parsippany Board of Election: This hotly contested race for three regular-term seats pits incumbents Dr. Frank Anthony Calabria and Frank Neglia with challenger Alison C. Cogan against self-described change agents James Carifi and Anthony DeIntinis.
- Morris County Freeholders: Three regular-term seats are up for election, with Democrats Wasim Kahn (Parsippany), Toshiba Foster and Joy Singh (Parsippany) taking on GOP candidates John Cesaro (Parsippany), John Krickus and David Scapicchio. Republican Hank Lyon will face Democrat Truscha Quatrone for an unexpired term.
- 26th District New Jersey Assembly: Republican Assemblywoman Betty Lou DeCroce, who is currently filling the unexpired term husband of her late husband Alex DeCroce, who died in January, will face Democrat Joseph Raich, of Parsippany, to fill the second year of the term.
- 11th Congressional District: Longtime Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen, who faced no opposition in the GOP primary, will take on Democratic challenger John Arvanites, who also had no opponents in the primary.
- U.S. Senate: U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D), the junior United States Senator from New Jersey who was first appointed in 2006 to fill Jon Corzine's seat, takes on Republican challenger Joe Kyrillos, who easily defeated three opponents in the primary.
- U.S. President: President Barack Obama will face former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

While I appreciate your ability to avoid even a hint of bias while highlighting most of the races at the local, state, and federal level, your remark about Jonathan Nelson being "the anti-rubber-stamp challenger" and Judy Tiedeman being "the mayor's choice" makes it clear who your preferred candidate it, Ms. Davis.
It is true that, as Judy's daughter, I have a bias of my own. That said, I find it unfortunate that your neutral description of the other races was something you couldn't manage with regard to the Township Council seat.

Um, no, Jill-Marie. As a matter of fact, at the time you were writing this, I was having a lovely cup of coffee at the Spa with your delightful mother. I don't live in Parsippany and had my own election in another town to deal with that actually impacts MY life.
Regarding your criticisms, to which you are entitled, "rubber stamp" was a phrase he's used throughout his campaign. I quoted him. Accurately.
Your mother's campaign is backed by the mayor. It is a fact that with some voters is a plus.
I wish both candidates good luck. And I wish the same to you; your mom raved about what a wonderful daughter you are. Your opinion, as incorrect as it is, shows you are loyal to her, and that is a good thing. She is very lucky to have you. Peace!

lets go: while i was sitting in line, at that time going on 3 1/2 hours, I in fact saw James Carifi cut the line 4 separate times. I believe he was driving his friends cars each time. ( Bentley, Mercedes SUV were the two that stood out ) All though, they could be his cars for all the times he scammed the town for over time. And yes he was in uniform and yes his buddies that were stationed at WAWA let him in. It is probably not their fault, he would probably make their work life miserable if they did not let him in. ( he may abuse his authority, im just saying )
