UPDATED: Dead Man Victim of Possible Hit-and-Run

Two southbound lanes closed in Parsippany.

Authorities are investigating what they believe was a hit-and-run accident that left the dead body of a man on the southbound side of Interstate 287 in Hanover between Interstate 80 and Route 10 Thursday morning, according to State Police.

According to Capt. Jeffrey Paul, a spokesman for the office of Morris County Prosecutor Robert A. Bianchi, State Police and the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit are "currently investigating a death."

State Police said preliminary evidence indicates that the body, that of a male, was the victim of a hit and run accident in Hanover Township.

The incident has caused heavy traffic delays in the area. According to a Nixle alert released by the Parsippany Police Department shortly after 7 a.m., two right lanes are closed on I-287 southbound near mile-marker 40 in Parsippany. The incident is also causing delays on I-80 in the area, Parsippany Police said.

According to State Police, its Fatal Accident Investigation Unit and the Criminal Investigation Office are looking into the death in conjunction with the Morris County Prosecutor's Office and a number of unspecified local agencies (the Parsippany Police Department is not one of them, said Ptlm. Earl Kinsey).

No further details were immediately available.

I want to know why someone wouldn't stop. What could have stopped someone from stopping. You can't they didn't know they hit someone. That is something that is really hard to miss. If you did miss it you probably shouldn't be driving.

Maybe the driver was so high on booze or drugs they had no idea they hit something. Maybe the driver was so high on booze or drugs, and such a coward, they high tailed it out of there for fear of being arrested for DUI, vehicular manslaughter, etc. etc.

This is terrible, not in defense of the drivers for not stopping but believe it was quite early, dark and people don't usually check the side of the road as they do the lanes... but it seems it would be hard to miss a body, neverless a deer.
