Reinstated Sgt. Denies 'Untruthfulness,' But Admits 'Mistakes'

A Parsippany cop who was reinstated as sergeant last week denied "untruthfulness" but admitted to "mistakes" during his supervision of a drug investigation 10 years ago, according to a settlement reached with the township.
Robert Whiteman was reinstated as sergeant Wednesday after being demoted to officer and suspended for six months for his handling of an investigation in December 2002 that resulted in a drug prosecution being dismissed.
A Superior Court judge ruled Parsippany police violated the Miranda rights of two individuals and seized evidence without a search warrant.
Whiteman filed suit in 2011 against the township, former Mayor Michael Luther and current Mayor James Barberio for what he claimed was "undue humiliation," according to NJ.com. Whiteman claimed he was harassed and given a night desk assignment, the article states.
Whiteman and the township reached an agreement in August, according to NJ.com. Whiteman's requests for $750,000 in damages and a promotion to lieutenant were withdrawn as part of the agreement, but he will receive $80,000 along with his reinstatement to sergeant, the article said.

I love public sector jobs -- only there can you make egregious mistakes (even admit to it) not get fired and turn around sue for your job and penalty payments. Well worth the lifetime benefits (pension and medical).

I am sure many more officers "mishandled" investigations and were "untrue" during arrest and have cause many civilians "undue humiliation"..... however, most of us just don't have the time or the money to fight. I am sure most people just plead guilty and pay their fine, so most mistakes and wrong doing by cops make usually just go unnoticed.
