Salvation Army in Need of Donations

Officials for Morristown branch of international charity say continued economic issues as well as natural disasters resulted in decreased giving in 2012.

With day care center and youth programs in "dire jeopardy," Salvation Army’s "Morristown Corps.," located on Spring Street, is turning to neighbors for help.

"As our nation continues to endure deep economic impacts, more and more
families are seeking extraordinary assistance," said Morristown Corp. spokesperson Jasmin Sacarello in a press release. The Salvation Army has a responsibility, she said, to continue providing resources which include childcare programs (for infants, toddlers, preschool, and school-age children); on-site food pantries; emergency homeless shelters, for women and children; shelters for men; and shelters for families.

Major Walter L. Droz noted in the press release, "that with the advent of natural disasters and the high unemployment rate, this year was a very challenging year for The Salvation Army, as the decrease of donations drastically affected the corps’ capacity to assist the growing demand.

"The need does not stop with the holidays,” he said.

The Salvation Army encourages donating this year, as "100 percent of donations are committed to our community," Sacarello said.

All contributions (check or money order) can be mailed to "The Salvation Army, 95 Spring St., Morristown, NJ 07960."

Maybe it's because they're gay bashing?

Came here to say this. With their anti-LGBT along with their refusal to take donations from any largely secular/atheist organizations they're campaign of hate is hitting them right where it hurts - in their wallet. We're not worried, Salvation Army, there are plenty of other organizations that do what you do without all the intolerance, bigotry, and religious crap. I look forward to your organization's future irrelevance and ultimate demise.

You can see right here why people are not fans of the LGBT community.

I wasn't even going to mention the proselytizing to defenseless victims. Do the bell-ringers even know what they're representing?

A fine example of holiday cheer...do either of you take the time to volunteer and improve your community or do you just hide behind the vail of your computer screen and mock the efforts of those trying to make a difference?

The posters made quite clear their reasons for disliking the Salvation Army and its practices, and they're not alone in that dislike.

@gary ... not to toot my own horn but I bet I volunteer more in a month that you do all year. But it's not about me. The Salvation Army isn't the only organization that does what it does. Maybe you should look into them more about their campaign of bigotry and ignorance. Unless you like that kind of thing. If so, you should point your finger away from critics and towards yourself. You can straw man and red herring all you like... at the end of the day the Salvation Army is a mean-spirited organization that holds people's well being and offer to help hostage over their campaign to spread its despicable religious agendas. No amount of finger pointing, and no amount of your denial, will change that.

Actually, I choose to contribute and work with organizations like American Friends Service Committee and others which have no aim to convert or proselytize in spite of their religious orientation, and Global Fund for Women, which is a secular organization working on women's rights. I'd rather choose a fund because I adhere to its causes rather than because it's at the door of the grocery store and stands against much of what I feel strongly about.

Some of us would describe the Salvation Army as haters; depends on your outlook. Let's hope you are not LGBT and in need someday.

Not sure how the organizations I prefer are haters, over those who are openly biased against homosexuals and non-Christians. If that is your preference, so be it. Then admit that you are the "hater", not us.

I always wonder if the people ringing the bells for the SA, truly know what the SA represents. I feel bad not donating, but I could never contribute to people who want to use my hard earned money to try and take away rights from those who deserve it!

Agreed. I prefer to grab a $5 ticket for the NJ Food Bank at checkout after bypassing the SA red bucket.

The Salvation Army is a church and entitled to its own beliefs and preachings.

I support the Salvation Army because it retains decent, wholesome values. The Salvation Army is a church headquartered in London, England that has many charitable activities.

I recommend donating to the Salvation Army. Very little goes to administrative expenses. Most of its donated resources is used to help those in need. I make a donation every year and also put cash in the red buckets around Christmas time.

Clyde, stop wasting your breath. From December 13 WSJ, a majority of Americans now support gay marriage. This has nothing to do with NAMBLA, which you seem to know a lot about. Are you a priest by any chance?

Driven by a surge in support among the young and minorities, a majority of Americans now supports gay marriage, marking an abrupt shift in public opinion on a divisive issue.

In a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll, 51% of Americans said they favor allowing same-sex marriages, up from 30% in 2004 and 41% just three years ago.

Some of the sharpest swings in acceptance come among African-Americans and suburbanites. In 2009, less than a third of blacks and 37% of Americans living in the suburbs said they approved of gay marriage. A majority of both of those groups now favor gay marriage.

Clyde, do you know the difference between child abuse and sexual orientation? I assume you're aware that adults have sexually abused children of the opposite sex. Does that mean heterosexuality is to blame???

Let me see.....some of you people think gay and lesbian perversion is good and the Salvation Army's charitable efforts are bad. That's the kind of twisted, evil thinking that makes someone believe it's OK to murder 26 people in an elementary school.

Mr. Donovan

Mentioning the tragedy in CN in the context of a nasty debate about the Salvation Army is tasteless and unwarranted. I am sure you could have found another analogy without demeaning the pain and grief of murdered children and their families.

The Salvation Army gives almost all of what they receive back to the community. I have never head about the gay and lesbian bashing, and if it is so I do not think that is right. However, there are very few charities that give back almost everything they receive. Merry Christmas to all and let us all give to whatever charity we believe does the best for the community as we all need help..

@kenny J...actually, I am the chairman of the advisory council for the Morristown Salvation Army...and am involved with a number of organizations as well. Perhaps it would be helpful for you tounderstand that the local chapter runs a day care center for 80+ under priveleged children that affords them 3 meals a day, education and the opportunity to be in a safe environment. They also sponsor after school programs for teens to socialize, do homework, mentor young children, etc... Over 400 Morris County families had Thanksgiving meals provided by the Salvation Army this year and we organize an Angel Tree program designed to insure children have Christmas who otherwise would not.

Happy Holidays to all!

@gary I commend you on your own personal dedication and commitment to advising SA to help those in need. What I cannot, and will not, do is shift my support to an organization that has openly stated its dogmatic biblical views. Yes, it's wonderful your organization provides to those in need, unless of course it's folks who don't already align with your christian superstitions and "morals". I hope you've learned some insights into the organization you volunteer for. Perhaps you should consider these matters more serious when reflecting on why donations for you are dropping significantly.

Clyde talks about the gay and lesbian "lifestyle choice"? I wonder when Clyde chose his assumed "heterosexual lifestyle choice"? I bet he can't tell us...why...because noone chooses his or her sexual orientation. Time and again we hear of politicians and religious leaders villifying gays and lesbians on a regular basis. It often becomes clear that those who scream the loudest are hiding their own sexual orientation issues...denying who they really are sexually. A quote from Shakepear's play Hamlet seems to provide an answer in regard to the negative comments, ignorance and hate from Clyde and his like about being gay: To quote...."I think the lady doth protest too much methinks"!”

I recently donated to the Salvation Army Newark branch and had a futon and an oversized chair - both in good condition and cllean but they wouldn't take them because they were more than 3 years old - makes me think they are selling the stuff rather giving it to those in need. The futon looks like a chaise lounge and can be used as a sofa and then you just flip the cusion out and you have a queen size bed. Anyone reading this post can have them but you would have to pick them up
