Support State Fire Sprinkler Legislation, Says Expert

Telll us how you feel about the issues.

A 7-year-old boy and his 52-year-old stepfather died tragically in a house fire on the morning of Monday, Feb. 18 on Flanders' Main Street. The boy’s mother and nine year old sister survived the fire but with injuries. Authorities suspect an improperly altered space heater to be the cause of the fire and investigators reported that the home did not have working fire alarms.

The winter months tend to be the most deadly for residential fires with the increased use of fireplaces and home heating systems. I urge families to take the proper precautions to prevent potentially dangerous fire situations.

Currently, there is pending legislation in New Jersey, bill A1570 in the Assembly and Senate bill S2273, which would make it mandatory for all newly constructed one- and two-family homes as well as condominiums and townhomes to be equipped with fire sprinklers.  If passed, this legislation would help to reduce the devastating effects of fires like this one, and help protect New Jersey residents in the places where they should feel safest -- their homes.

I urge you to check your smoke detectors and to educate yourselves on how fire sprinkler systems can provide your family the time needed to escape and protections against the dangers of fire. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during this difficult time.

NJ Fire Sprinkler Advisory Board

If passed you will see another bill that government passes that hurts the housing industry already bleeding. Government again creating more laws to protect the people is why many jobs have left this country. It is so difficult to be in business and compete on a global market because the intrusiveness of our federal, state and city governments. The bill make the us non completive but even worse is that when government takes those on to administer they fail and it becomes so burdensome that small business just gives up and that is 1 real reason that jobs are so bad. I am in business and because of the ridiculous NJ regulations I have spent 50% of my time dealing with inept, poorly run government agencies that I am no longer intersected in doing business in my home state. It is a shame that America has become so over regulated that it is chasing the job creators away.

You couldn't have expressed my feelings any better. I ran a small business for the last 20 years, but closed up shop do the the very things that you have referred to in your comment. In a couple years I will retire and leave this lousy state.

If New Jersey passes this it only means that the surrounding communities will see a bump in construction. Dont make it mandatory. Sprinklers have been around for decades, and have always been an option there is no reason to force this upon the potential new home owner. Smoke detectors work and work well.
