Veteran Questions Frelinghuysen's Voting Record
John Paul Foley attended a town hall meeting in Roseland in June, where U.S. Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen was in attendance.
To the Editor:
I attended a town hall meeting on Saturday, June 23, 2012, at the Roseland Municipal Building that was conducted by Rodney Frelinghuysen, the Congressman representing NJ’s 11th district.
As a veteran who served this country, I have a special interest in understanding how and why our representatives vote on issues of war, the military, and veterans’ affairs. I asked Congressman Frelinghuysen three questions about his voting record:
- Why did you vote against a house resolution to remove our troops from Afghanistan?
- Why did you vote against bills that would have provided clean water to our troops in Iraq and that would have given our military units with minimum rest periods between deployments to Iraq?
- Why did you vote against a bill that would have provided job training to men and women who served in our military?
Congressman Frelinghuysen never answered the first question. With respect to the second two, he replied as follows: “Veterans should never be second class citizens. I’ve always voted to support health care and job training for veterans.” When asked the third question, the Congressman actually denied ever having voted against any resolution that would provide health benefits and job training to men and women who served in our military.
Perhaps the Congressman misspoke because apparently, he did just that. And the proof is in Congressman Frelinghuysen’s voting record.
In 2011, he voted against a resolution to remove our military men and women from Afghanistan. H.R. 28, Roll Call 193, March 17, 2011.
In 2007, he voted against a bill giving our troops a longer break between deployments to places like Iraq and Afghanistan. H.R. 3159, Roll Call 796, August 2, 2007.
In 2006, he voted against a motion to provide a tax break on death benefits for windows and orphans of military personnel who died serving this country. H.R. 5122, Roll Call 144, May 11, 2006.
In 2005, he voted against a motion to provide job training to our vets.
H.R. 27, Motion to Recommit, Roll Call 47, March 5, 2005.
In 2005, he voted against a motion that would have given men and women in the reserves the same access to healthcare as active-duty members.
H.R. 1815, Roll Call 221, May 25, 2005.
In 2003, he voted against an amendment that would have provided better drinking water and health benefits for service men and women.
H.R. 3289, Roll Call 546, October 16, 2003.
And these bills are just the tip of the iceberg. He voted over and over again to expand the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. He rejected over and over again any measure that would make the lives of our troops slightly more tolerable. He voted over and over again against aid to veterans.
It’s as if the Republican Party wants to have their cake, my cake, and your cake, and eat it too. Unfortunately, that is not the way it works.
As an educated constituent, I have difficulty supporting any candidate who supports veterans in their words, but not in the deeds of their voting record.

Ummmm, you do know Rodney IS a veteran, right? He learned about the sacrifice veterans make not on congressional committees, but in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam. Mr. Foley, I am quite certain that you were aware of this fact and omitted it from your well-written letter for reasons I can only speculate about. Thank you for your service as well.

Rodney is a good guy and a real patriot, but he cannot break himself away from whatever the GOP leadership asks for and, as we all know, that is a deadly trap.

Rodney needs to replaced in a primary election by a conservative challenger in the next primary election. Rodney is too tied to the corrupt Morris County Republican machine. The Democrat running against Rodeny in this Novermber's election would not be a good choice.

Rodney votes with the GOP and its platform which has become extreme. He has become a disappointment for moderates and all those who support vets, women's access medical choice and freedom from other's religions.
I appreciate his service in Vietnam as I lost my finacee in that conflict and still feel that loss. But I no longer feel that Rep Frelinghuysen represents my interests , he appears to support the GOP extreme more than the moderates of NJ.

Regardless of party affiliation, politicians tend to become bizarre and unproductive when they are in office too long. Forget "term limits" - this will never happen; we HAVE, and always have had "term limits" - they are in the hands of the voters. The incumbents seem to be voted in again and again for no good reason other than resistance to upsetting the apple cart. November's coming up, so we'll see what happens.

Rep. Frelinghuysen is not a bad person, but he doesn't have a spine; as a House Republican, he takes his orders from people who ARE bad, namely Messrs. Boehner and Cantor. It probably won't happen this year, but we really need a new Congressman (and I don't care from which party) who will represent our interests rather than sell us out by following the orders of Boehner and his clown college.

Mr. Foley, first let me thank you for your service to this great Country. I don't dispute the voting record of Congressman Frelinghuysen that you provided, but I caution anyone that reads your article to remember that these pieces of legislation may very well have had other legislation tied to it. Often, several pieces of legislation are packaged into a bundle and must be passed together. While the issues raised in your article may be no-brainers, legislation tied to it may have been very polarizing or controversial. Voting records are often used to highlight a candidate's view on a certain issue, but rarely is the single issue the only one addressed by the legislation. I don't know if any other issues were tied to these pieces of legislation. I would suggest anyone wishing to consider the issues mentioned above to read the legislation in its entirety before coming to a conclusion about the voting record of Congressman Frelinghuysen (or any other candidate, for that matter). With that being said, I will take my own advice and look into these votes further.

Rodney is a veteran and is still a good "soldier" -- that is as a foot soldier for the extremists in the republican party. He has becaome an automaton who does what his party "General" tells him to do. For the past four years he has not had a mind of his own. He is now doing the partiy's business, NOT the people's business. He needs to go. Thank you for your service Rodney. Please retire.

Thanks to John Foley for starting this thread. Yes, the moderate Congressman Frelinghuysen is no more. He is everything you all have said. It's time for new representation -- check out John Arvanites, the candidate opposing Rodney in the coming election. I like what he says, and he seems to think for himself. We need a Congress that isn't run by corporations or ideology. http://www.arvanitesforcongress.com

What difference does that make? The author expressed an opinion on Frelinghuysen's performance based on facts, i.e., how he voted on specific bills affecting veterans. You may choose to agree or not, but it's rather close-minded to base your opinion on whom he supports for President.

As a WWII vet I would defend Rodney Frelinghuysen to the death. He is not every-
body's idea of a conservative, but he has enough of his agenda that I agree with
that I will give him my vote. What is the realistic alternative anyway? A Democrat?

Dick as a Vietvet who knows the pitiful statistics that my generation has suffered under.
I am particularly offended at Mr Frelinghuysens deplorable voting record when it comes to veterans issues revealed here. Especially in light of the fact that yet another generation of veterans are eligble for benefits like the GOP just blocked.

Dick,
I would not defend any politician to the death. Thank you for your service and, by the way; I am also a vet. I ask NOTHING from Uncle Sam because I am a vet, mainly due to the fact that I'm not a DISABLED vet. A DISABLED vet, due to a service-related problem, is a different thing entirely. And that is the problem. VA benefits SHOULD be means-tested for those vets who do not have service-related disabilities. In fact, it is, but there are lots of vets who are scamming the system.
I was paid for my service - not much, but I was paid. I never expected much from Uncle Sam, after I was honorably discharged, other than to be left alone. I did my three-year hitch and built a life of my own.
As far as Rodney goes, I'll probably vote for him as well, mainly due to the fact that no conservative choices exist. Also, all those benefits that he voted against are paid by YOU...if you are among those who happen to pay Income Tax.
