What Should Replace Five Guys?

Patch wants to hear your ideas for filling vacant business buildings.

Sometimes business vacancies in town can be the result of a game of retail musical chairs, and that can mean news both good and bad.

The arts and crafts store Michael's move a year ago to the Troy Hills Shopping Center was great news for the mall, but the news was not as good for the Morris Hills Shopping Center it left behind. But what comes around goes around: The Troy Hills mall now has to fill a hole left by the move of the Five Guys burger franchise from 1103 Route 46 to 804 Route 46 (which is great news, of course, for Arlington Plaza, where it now resides).

The goal now is to fill the space where Five Guys used to be, which would be great news for remaining mall merchants, including Pathmark, LA Fitness and Muscle Maker Grill.

So what do you think would work for the space? Tell us what you would like to see fill Five Guys' old retail space in the comments. We will take your suggestions and pass them along to Mayor James Barberio, who says he is working hard to bring ratables to Parsippany.

Please share what ideas you may have that would make sense for the site. Your suggestion just may be the one to bring a new business into town and inject some life into Troy Hills Shopping Center. Share your thoughts below.

When I moved to Parsippany 6 years ago - I was amazed that there wasn't a Starbucks!

I think Five Guys left for an inferior location. Go figure. A Cinnabon there would be nice! More importantly, we need to see Chevy's reopened or replaced (it's been over a year since the fire). We also need a good restaurant to replace Chili's. If we can't get a distinctive privately run eatery, maybe a popular chain like Cheeseburger in Paradise or California Pizza?

Ive contacted Chevys in the past regarding that location. They said first it was coming end of summer last year then now this spring. Spring is almost over.

Work continues at Chevy's. Takes time, but the owners said they are committed to reopening in the not too distant future.

A really good Italian bakery like Sorrentos (East Hanover) would be great!

Five guys left because the rents are silly in that location.

I know but im sure its coming in september. If you go around back they have started the walk in freezer. They had to get a variance for it with the town. The town knows they are coming.

Maybe not so much Muscle Maker Grill. I don't think they got a whole lot of carry over business from Five Guys.

I would say one of my favorite things about Parsippany is that we don't have a Starbucks.

Really? Huh. I judge an area based on whether it has culture and Starbucks.

Culture and Starbucks are not the same thing, Natalie.

I don't understand how people, intelligent people waste their money on starbucks. There coffee taste like someone burned it. Not for me. If you want culture go to the town library or the theater. You can also spend some of your time helping others who might be able to do for themselves these days....My humble opinion..Harold, Parsippany resident 14 yrs.

Many good suggestions. But comment above is correct. Planning Board approved Smashburger for that site last month.

That was fast. Talk about responsive government. Good work, people! ;-)

Leaves a thought, given the new Route 10 Smashburger... Two Smashburgers and no Starbucks.

I agree with all those who suggested Starbucks. How many Dunkin Donuts are in Parsippany, yet there is not one Starbucks?

Parsippany-Troy Hills is a great town and it needs more classy places. Therefore, Starbucks is one good place to replace 5 guys.

Agree with Claudia.....a great bakery like Sorrentos or Calandras would be great in that spot. Although my kids do love Smashburger. I also agree with the other comment that Five Guys left for a worse location. That Shop Rite jughandle and parking is a pain in the neck!

I am a Dunkin Donuts fan, so do not care about a lack of Starbucks in Parsippany, though it is strange. Starbucks did want to locate on the vacant land in front of the former Harold's Deli, but the proprietor of Harold's didn't want the breakfast competition and prevailed on Starbucks to abandon the plan in return for him serving their products. Of course, now there is no Harold's.

Jc's is horrible! Stale bread and old cakes. Last time I bought an apple pie...cut into it and it was moldy. Gross!

Starbucks or Panera get my vote!

Then we need a Trader Joe's in the old Michael's...

What I have never put my eyes on in town is a place where you can buy some reasonably priced hair products and equipment to do hair. And of course well assorted products at a reasonable price. I use to go down to Howell on business and there was a great store like that in one of the malls there, on route 9.

we could also use a trader joe's. Only problem I see is Pathmark, shoprite, foodtown and the the chinese supermarket on 46 are quite close to each other..That would be a lot competition for any food store in this area.

A hot dog place or Pizza. Good fast food is easier for the lunch crowd during the week, and kids love both. Or maybe an Ice Cream or Yogurt.

Basking Robbins used to be in that shopping center where subway is I think. Also Cold stone creamery failed in the spot that muscle maker took over.

More importantly when are they going to stop towing commuters cars from the car park? We are shoppers there too however they have no problem removing our cars. The towing appears illegal also as the signs say 4 hour minimum not 4 hour maximum for customer parking but you complaint to the mall owners and they ignore you. So basically put what you want there I will not be going.
