What Should Replace Walgreens?

Patch wants to hear your ideas for filling Parsippany's vacant business buildings.

The recent move of Walgreens Pharmacy to the Baldwin Plaza Shopping Center gave the township a revitalized, bright and busy "new" drug store. It also left Parsippany with a big, empty space at 1470 Route 46 in Troy Hills Village, the old Walgreens digs.

Which makes this the perfect time for Patch's periodic guessing game regarding business vacancies in the township...

If you travel the township along Route 46, you've surely seen that big empty box where once there was light, traffic, commerce: What type of business can bring this space back to life? What do you think would work for Walgreens' former space? Tell us what you would like to see in the comments. We will take your suggestions and pass them along to the town's economic development chief, Mayor James Barberio.

Whole Foods, Trader Joes or specialty grocery store

Why not the Whole Foods proposed for the heavily wooded site at Waterview? Doesn't it make more sense to recondition an existing retail site for this development than to level 26 acres of trees??

I agree with renovating an existing empty store, as there are at least 2 that I know of in the area. Trader Joe's or Whole Foods would be great! We could use a grocery store of some sort in this part of Parsippany. I do 95% of my grocery shopping in Boonton and the other 5% in Morris Plains. And for specialty health food items, I go to Denville! Wouldn't it be nice to do at least some of it in town! I am also not quite sure why Walgreen's felt the need to move to the Baldwin Shopping Center. The parking is terrible.

Whole Foods should replace the old Walgreens site. Whey level the 26 acres of heavily wooded area at Waterview for Whole Foods.

Agree with Roberta, makes sense. Whole Foods or Traders Joes would do well. We have nothing like that in Parsippany. Why should our residents have to leave town for a good health food store or organic spices. I either go to Denville, Florham Park or Wayne!

I'm om favor of Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. Slightly MORE in favor of Whole Foods, since it would eliminate the need to destroy more of our green space; but it would be nice if we could have a Trader Joe's that sells wine... that drive to Westfield for their "Three-Buck Chuck" wines is a bit burdensome.

A Trader Joes or Whole Foods occupying ONE of these already existing empty stores would be great. Why destroy land when there is available space? Makes no sense.

This would be a great location for the Hare Krishnas to use for Krishna Consciousness education, recruitment and community outreach, prior to the construction of their temple in Parsippany.

If the people of Parippany could have an opportunity to understand the Krishna Consciousness movement, there wouldn't be so much bigotry exhibited with regard to the zoning application for their temple. This site would be the perfect place for educational activities and maybe a lacto-vegetarian food store.

Wow, that's funny, "Clyde", to see you talking about bigotry and Krishna Conciousness. Tell me, what part of the vitriol and anger that you normally spew around here fits into that world view? And why are you suddenly so concerned with bigotry against the Krishnas as opposed to, say Muslims or homosexuals?

Well, "Sick Troll," the proposed Hare Krishna temple fulfills a need in the Parsippany area and the building itself will be a unique and attractive architectural addition to the Troy and Baldwin roads area. Hindu people have an equal right to worship and this new facility will give them that opportunity.

Put Whole Foods there!!! How awful to tear down 25 more acres of woods, when we have SO MUCH empty retail space on Rt. 46! C'mon Barberio, I thought Parsippany prided itself on trees! Paula Mondschein

You're right Debbie.. its bad enough that the wooded areas are slowly being depleted which means NO homes for the animals either.. And more of them running into the streets.. And tearing up this piece of property sounds like a GOOD idea, why?

I wonder about the "Parsippany pride(d) itself on trees" part.

Have you noticed how, in the past year or two, the beautiful old sycamores that shaded many of Lake Hiawatha's streets have been cut down ? And they -- or at least the dozen or so that I saw -- showed no signs of decay or disease.

This is Parsippany. It will be subdivided into nail salons, mediocre pizzerias and Rt 46 video will expand his "operation".

Whatever store occupies the old Walgreens site is fine. I read about the fact that whole foods has already signed a lease for the wooded property on 46 makes me sick, I am a city boy raised in the asphalt jungle of the Bronx. My appreciation of open space and trees makes me say NO to whole foods killing more trees and animals.

Stephanie, you are right on target. There is a whole community of seniors, and working class families in Troy Hills Village, right behind this location and an Aldi's would be great right here.

Thanks, Bob... Yes, an Indian grocery is going into the location. It will be a market, but not a Trader Joe's or Whole Foods.

Interesting to see calls for an Aldi's, the no-frills grocery. I have shopped at the ones in Union and in Owings Mills, Md.

Hi Natalie,
I'm a little confused. I know it says you'd pass our suggestions along to the mayor, but if an Indian grocery is already set for the location, then why are we discussing what we'd like to see there? I'm being sarcastic - I'm wondering if I've misread something.

Bring back Perkins, food is better than IHOP, they have more of a selection for take out muffins etc, the portions are a good size and the price is right.

Or, Margheritas, they were in Livingstom on route 10 best Mexican in this area and the decor was awesome prices were good too.

Whole Foods or Trader Joe's should replace the former Walgreens/Costcutters. Please do not use the land across from the Police Dept for this, as we have vacant business space existing where Walgreens once lived.

If you get an abundance of traffic for the stores recommended, you may have trouble getting in and out of the parking lot. Two ways to get in from 46 going west only and one way through the development.

Exiting the lot you can only west and not east. or you can go through the development. I think the residents would complain.

Just to be clear here to those who may not have heard the rumors but my above comment is in reference to rumors that the reason the IHOP in Parsippany would shut down was because the owner was arrested on charges of running a prostitution ring using some of the waitresses as, well, hookers. However, these are just rumors at this point.

DM Herinya,
We got the news of the impending new occupant after publication. Since then, this has been a fun game of "what if" and a great place for folks opposed to the Waterview Plaza development proposal to vent. Can't speak for anyone else, but I enjoy reading people's thoughts in most instances.
