Parsippany resident and Parsippany Hills High School senior Rahul Manne was accepted under Early Decision to Carnegie Mellon's School of Computer Science (ranked #1 nationally for Computer Science). Manne developed his interest in computer science as a freshman in high school. His parents estimate he has spent over 3,500 hours programming since freshman year. Manne has received little formal training and instead is primarily self-taught. He started programming with basic homework assignments and later went on to develop programs and applications.
At Carnegie Mellon, Manne intends to study Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. He is interested in studying how Artificial Intelligence could be used to solve some of the world's problems such as lack of education in remote and impoverished places.
Carnegie Mellon has been a leader in Artificial Intelligence (AI) research since the field of AI was founded. Herbert Simon and Allen Newell played a crucial role in the birth of AI, with grand scientific goals, including the understanding and reproduction in a computer of human problem solving as symbolic reasoning, knowledge representation, and learning. Artificial Intelligence Research at Carnegie Mellon is spread across many units of School of Computer Science, including not only Computer Science Department, but also Robotics Institute, Language Technologies Institute, Machine Learning Department, and some activity in Human-Computer Interaction Institute.
Manne also applied to MIT and Caltech but is happy to have been accepted to his top choice school under early decision. In addition to being a strong student, Manne has also served as the founder and president of the PHHS Chess Club and has been an active participant of the swim team, marching band, and science clubs. On weekends, he attends Columbia University’s Science Honors Program.
Manne is looking forward to graduation and enjoying the rest of his senior year with his family and friends.
