Join Mayor James Barberio and the Township of Parsippany-Troy Hills as it welcomes the start of the Jewish Festival of Lights.

Hanukkah is an eight-day holiday commemorating the rededication of Jerusalem's Holy Temple after the Maccabees' righteous victory over the Syrians in the second century B.C.

Part of the Maccabees' story involves a long-recounted miracle in which an empty oil lamp stayed lit for eight days, aiding in their survival. To symbolize the event each year at Hanukkah, a special seven-branched candalabra called a menorah is lit, with one new candle being set alight for each of observance's eight nights.

In honor of Hanukkah and the lesson the Maccabees' story can teach everyone, the township holds its annual menorah lighting 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec.12 at the municipal building. Representatives of the area's Jewish reform, conservative and orthodox congregations will be on hand for this yearly joy-filled celebration, and all in Parsippany are invited.

As a township operating under the Faulkner Act, Parsippany-Troy Hills has a paid, full-time mayor and five township council members.

The mayor and council meet twice a month on Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m at town hall.

As in all Faulkner Act municipalities, citizens in the Mayor-Council system have the right to propose ordinances without action by the mayor and council. A resident may prepare and submit a petition signed by 10 percent of the registered voters who turned out in the last general election in an odd-numbered year. Once the petition is submitted, the Township Council can vote to pass the requested ordinance. If the members opt not to vote on the mesaure, it goes directly to the voters.
