5 Holiday Things to Do This Weekend

Tips for those who want to start holidaying early

There is a certain breed of human who loves the holidays and gets into the spirit weeks, even months, before December rolls around. For you, and you know who you are, this 5 Things offers ideas for those who want to take advantage of the weekend to get started on holiday shopping or just to enjoy all-around holiday fun. It's also for the rest of us, because Christmas and Hanukah are only weeks away. Happy holidaying, all!

  1. This event runs all day Friday (or, from 10 a.m. through 4 p.m.): The Town Club of Mountain Lakes presents its  at St. Catherine’s Church, 10 N. Pocono Road in Mountain Lakes. Some of this year’s exciting offerings include: antiques, accessories, clothing, gourmet specialties, home décor, jewelry, sportswear, toys, vintage items and more - plus a silent auction and tricky tray. Admission is $5 per person, and proceeds benefit Denville Social Services and the Town Club Grant Program. Email townclub@mtnlakes.org for more information.
  2. Another event lasting all day Friday--and in fact all weekend--is the in historic Mount Tabor. Handicrafts, collectibles, vintage jewelry, ornaments with a Victorian flair, fill-a-tin cookies and more will be available Friday 5 to 8 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. through 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. at the Bethel, 26 Simpson Ave. Proceeds benefit the Mount Tabor Historical Society.   3. If the holidays means jewelry shopping to you, you're in luck. At 6 p.m. Friday,  at 176 Route 46 in Parsippany presents a featuring the unveiling of its new Scott Kay fashion line. Hors d' oeuvres and drinks will be served and guests will receive a free gift bag. And if you have unwanted gold, you can have it appraised and receive cash for it.   4. Here is the event for you if you're the type to turn physical challenge into holiday joy for others: At 8 a.m. Saturday, Parsippany's  at 99 Route 46 presents its , an effort designed to bring Thanksgiving dinner to families who could use some help this year. Organizers say the bike ride involved, which runs between Parsippany and Florham Park, isn't far, but they warn it is a bit challenging to carry a 25-pound turkey on a bicycle. (They recommend bringing a backpack.) After the ride, enjoy cider, donuts, and coffee at the store.
  5.  invites you to help make a warm winter for others. On Sunday, the Parsippany post hosts its at 91 N. Beverwyck Road and asks people to bring new and gently used coats to help flood survivors and others in need. The coat drive kicks off Sunday at 3 p.m. and runs afterward: Coat donations may be dropped off at the Post Hall Mondays through Saturdays between 3-9 p.m. through Thursday, Dec. 15. (A Toys for Tots drive is on here too, so also bring a new, unwrapped toy to donate!)
