Celebrating National Donut Day in Parsippany

What better way to mark the sweet treat's day of honor than with something free?

Holy Munchkins,  it's the first Friday in June, also known as National Donut Day.  Both Dunkin’ Donuts and Krispy Kreme are offering free donuts all day to mark the event.

Dunkin’ Donuts locations in Parsippany will give you a free donut with the purchase of any beverage on June 3.  The local locations include: 199 Littleton Rd., 323 Smith Rd., 450 North Beverwyck Rd., 820 Route 46, 3440 Route 46 and 147 Route 46.

Krispy Kreme is offering free donuts with no strings attached, but the train ticket will cost you more than the value of the free donut, since there are no New Jersey locations.  If you commute to New York City, though, you're in luck: Stop by Penn Station, 2 Penn Plaza. at the Amtrak Level for your free treat today.

National Donut Day was founded in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army to assist  needy people during the Great Depression.  The event also celebrated the World War I Salvation Army "Lassies," women who served doughnuts--as they cylindrical cakes were spelled then--to soldiers.

A few donut facts courtesy of The Donut Book: The Whole Story in Words, Pictures & Outrageous Tales, published in 2005:

  • People in the U.S. consume more than 10 billion donuts every year.
  • Donuts contribute over $2 billion to the economy annually.
  • Native Americans enjoyed donuts back in the day: Professor E.B. Reynard of the University of Colorado Museum of Natural History discovered a petrified donut in an Oklahoma cave, along with relics of a prehistoric tribe.

Dunkin’ Donuts’ deal is good for one free donut of any variety with the purchase of any beverage.  The Dunkin’ Donuts store locator page can be used to find additional locations.
