Enjoying Summer's Bounty On the Cheap

No drive-through, but plenty of healthy items on this dollar menu

Summer is such a great time of year and one of the best parts of the season is spending time with your family outdoors.  When it comes to eating, it’s great to bring the outdoors inside by bringing fresh fruit and vegetables to the table.

But, how does your garden grow?  If it’s anything like mine, you must be buying your produce from the local grocery stores.  This week’s article looks at the best buys on produce in the Parsippany area.

Some of the great buys on fresh veggies right now are corn (Foodtown $.20 each), tomatoes ($1.69/lb ShopRite), eggplant ($1.49/lb Pathmark or ShopRite) and squash ($.99/lb ShopRite).  Arguments about fast food being cheaper than fresh food are out the window right now, since four chicken nuggets from the dollar menu are nowhere near as filling as the five ears of corn you could be chomping on for the same price.

And, fruit!  The best buys are grapes (ShopRite $.99/lb), strawberries ($1.49/lb ShopRite) and watermelon (only $.59/lb at Pathmark or ShopRite!).

Below is a comprehensive list of common fruits and vegetables. If you’re a one-stop shopper, it looks like you’ll be heading to ShopRite.
