What to do in the region this weekend

It's a brand new year, which means lots of new weekends to fill with educational, entertaining activities. Every Thursday, Get Out lists weekend events and happenings in and near Parsippany, so don't miss getting the news each week. If you have no idea what to do with yourself over the next few days, take a gander at what follows, including the  running all weekend at the Sheraton Parsippany Hotel. Surely you will find ideas to help you get out of the house this weekend.

Winter Karate Program Trial for Kids
When/Where: Any day Thursday through Monday at 3:30 p.m. at  of Butler.
Why Go: Kids ages 5 and up can participate in a five-week karate trial and parents can watch the fun.
Cost: $70 per student


When/Where: Friday, 3-9:30 p.m., Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the , 199 Smith Road, Parsippany
Why Go: To see pretty kitties compete
Cost: $8 adults, $6 seniors and kids 4-12

Why Go: You love the theater, you love ALW and his music makes you want to siiiiing!

Computer Class: Job and Career Accelerator
When/Where: Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Bridgewater Township Library.
Why Go: To learn from an instructor how to create professional resumes and cover letters through a Job and Career Accelerator in an effort to find available jobs. 
Cost: Free, but registration is required.

Winter Birds
When/Where: Saturday at 2 p.m. at the 190 Lord Stirling Road, Basking Ridge
Why Go: Where else can people of all ages learn to identify birds by sight and learn the basics of bird behavior and biology?
Cost: Free


When/Where:
 Saturday, 2 p.m. at the Museum of Early Trades & Crafts, 9 Main St., Madison.
Why go: Learn about how cartoonist Thomas Nast’s illustrations influenced iconic American symbols that we know and love today.

Kinnelon High School Alumni Basketball Game
When/Where: Saturday at 2 p.m. at , 121 Kinnelon Road
Why Go: If you're a KHS alum, so you can cheer on your former classmates. If not, to simply watch a multi-generational basketball game.
Cost: Free

Open House for Membership Pre-School Camp
When/Where: Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum Jewish Community Center.
Why Go: To see what kinds of programs are offered to the community, including Indoor Pool (Salt Based), Fitness Center, Group Fitness Classes, Personal Training, J-Spin Program, LesMills Body Pump Fitness Program, Swim Instruction, Sports Leagues, Summer Swim Club and Bridgewater Tide Swim Team, among others.
Cost: The open house is free to the community, but registering on that day includes savings of $100 to $200.

Why Go: You're a Civil War buff, and want to meet someone who knows their stuff.
Cost: $8

Sunday, 2 p.m. at the , 9 Main St., Madison
Why Go: For the rare opportunity to hear eight  harpists in one afternoon.

Why Go: You want to enjoy some pizza while sketching a model for three hours.
