Hurricane Sandy Prep, for Some, Means Sandbags

Police say sand is still available for residents at two township locations, but you'll need to provide your own bags.

As many Parsippany residents learned over a year ago when Hurricane Irene was heading the township's way, bags of sand can be used as a flood control barrier. Now, Hurricane Sandy is headed this way, and Parsippany Police and emegency responders are making sand available to the public free of charge.

On Saturday and Sunday, sand has been available for residents on Lake Shore Drive across from the Lake Hiawatha Swim Club. Patch encountered a number of people at the site early Sunday morning as they used shovels to fill bags as part of their pre-storm preparation.

The PPD says that as of 1 p.m., no more bags are available, however, sand may be collected if you bring your own containers, be they zipper plastic bags, burlap bags or whatever you have.

Sand is also available at the Knoll East Country Club on Greenbank Road. At this site, in addition to providing your own bags, you will need to bring a cup or shovel.
