Irene: A Visit to Lake Hiawatha's Super Foodtown

The aisles are all but deserted, but the supermarket staff says the store will remain open until 10 p.m.

Lake Hiawatha's Super Foodtown is the perfect place to shop now, because most area residents appear to be taking the government's advice and staying at home—which means largely empty aisles.

Unfortunately, while many items are available for purchase, items required to survive a serious storm like Irene—water and batteries, for instance—are running low.

The few shoppers Patch met at the store were busy grabbing snack items. (We agree—waiting through a storm is way more pleasant with cookies and chips.)

A store staffer said Super Foodtown is usually open until 10 p.m. on Saturday nights, and the intention is for the market to stay open for customers in need.
