Irene: A Visit to Lake Hiawatha's Super Foodtown

The aisles are all but deserted, but the supermarket staff says the store will remain open until 10 p.m.

Lake Hiawatha's Super Foodtown is the perfect place to shop now, because most area residents appear to be taking the government's advice and staying at home—which means largely empty aisles.

Unfortunately, while many items are available for purchase, items required to survive a serious storm like Irene—water and batteries, for instance—are running low.

The few shoppers Patch met at the store were busy grabbing snack items. (We agree—waiting through a storm is way more pleasant with cookies and chips.)

A store staffer said Super Foodtown is usually open until 10 p.m. on Saturday nights, and the intention is for the market to stay open for customers in need.

We were in there a few hours ago and noticed the water aisle empty. The store manager asked if we needed anything as he would go and see what was still left. very nice. This is the reason i like this small store.
