Route 46 Sunoco Expansion Approved

Gas station will soon offer car and box truck rentals.

The approved an application for a site expansion at the Sunoco gas station at 730 Route 46 at its meeting at Wednesday night. Under the plan, the station will get six additional parking spaces, enabling the business to rent cars and box trucks to interested customers.

Appearing on behalf of the Sunoco was Richard Dovlatyan, who has operated the station for 17 years. His application met all of the board's conditions, which included expanding the length of the parking spaces to 21 feet to accommodate the 12-foot box trucks that will be parking there.

“If people want to move out and sell their house and have a moving truck, it will be parked out there and they can just rent it out,” Dovlatyan said.

Dovlatyan suggested that, to start, he would host four rental vehicles on-site.

Some ZBA members suggested that the project only include the installation of four parking spaces. Project architect Ken Fox, however, stated that there was still a need for six spaces.

“We were going to have six parking spaces so he has the opportunity for somebody to park the car in there so they can business pick the rental car up,” Fox said. “We still think it’s the best way to accommodate the amount of vehicles you’re bringing in and out of here.”

After a brief debate, Zoning Board Chairman Robert Iracane was inclined to agree with Fox and Dovlatyan’s request for six spaces.

“Whether you have four, whether you have six, nobody’s going to check," Iracane said. Let’s be realistic, guys. Give him six. It’s not going to have an impact on any person in this room, ever.”

Fox stated that the surrounding area should experience little if any impact from the project either before or after its completion.

“He’s trying to keep a small expansion to this use, and it’s something that really does conform to the neighborhood,” the architect said. “We feel that this is particularly suited for this. We’re talking about a little bit of a parking space expansion located right here at this intersection. It’s really comparable to the uses that are in the area.”
