PCDCC Presents Lecture on Getting Kids Ready to Start School

The gathering featured an expert from the YCS Institute of Infant and Preschool Mental Health.

The Parsippany Child Day Care Center hosted a June 8 parent workshop called "Emotional Foundations of Learning: Getting Your Child Ready to Learn." The program was presented by Lorri Sullivan of the Youth Consultation Service Institute of Infant and Preschool Mental Health in East Orange.

Sullivan holds a masters degree in education and is the associate airector forTraining/Consultation at the institute. She provides training and consultation for a variety of early childhood programs serving area school districts.

An audience of about 25 listened as Sullivan talked about the impact of social and emotional development during a child’s early formative years, generally considered to be the time from birth to about three years of age. The impact, she said, is massive—that childrens' development in these areas are critical to the success they achieve in learning.

Sullivan also took the time to field audience questions ranging from bedtime routines to potty training.

Carrie and Joe Visaggio of Parsippany, parents of 2- and 4-year-old girls, appreciated the event.

"Workshops are a great way to get information, make it your own, and apply it to your children’s individual needs,” Carrie Visaggio said.

The Parsippany Child Day Care Center exists to offer support to parents. In operation since 1968, the center welcomes the diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds of the families it serves and encourages kids to develop and learn at their own pace.

Center Director JoAnn Quattro said the PCDCC makes every effort to “provide quality child care and early education to children of families of all incomes living and working in the Parsippany area.”
