Photo of the Day: Marking Columbus Day

A memorial to Christopher Columbus has meaning on the day when some remember his historic, if accidental, landing in what Europeans considered the New World.

It's Columbus Day, the national holiday that honors Italian explorer Christopher Columbus and what many consider his discovery of the land that became the United States of America. The day holds meaning for many in Parsippany, and the existence of a memorial to the explorer's accidental landing in the New World—he was seeking a trade route to India, but found this continent instead—attests to that fact. The statue stands as a testament to an accidental arrival that—for good or ill—led to the founding of a great nation.

Christopher Columbus did not discover the United States. Christopher Columbus initially landed in the Bahamas and on susequent trips landed in Central and South America. Like so many "explorers" he did his fair share of exploitation of the native people. He is no hero and if this is the best we can come up with to celebrate Italian Americans we are sad indeed. Typical of the America today, uneducated and ignorant, lolly gagging in fantasy instead of dealing with reality.

To celebrate Christopher Columbus is as ridiculous as the "Jersey Shore" cast representing and celebrating the people of NJ.
