POLL: Should Salt Water Taffy Be NJ's State Candy?

State legislature unanimously approves shore treat to become state candy.

The Honeybee, brook trout, Eastern Goldfinch, blueberry, Square Dance, and even the Hadrosaurus Foulkii.

Those items may be better known as New Jersey’s state insect, fish, bird, fruit, dance, and dinosaur (yes, New Jersey has it’s own state dinosaur).

Now the New Jersey legislature is one step closer to designating a state candy, according to The Celock Report at johncelock.com.

Salt water taffy is at the heart of legislation unanimously approved Thursday by the state’s Assembly Tourism, Gaming and the Arts Committee, the report said. The bill’s sponsor, Assemblyman John Wisniewski (D-Sayreville), was given the idea by a group of fifth-graders from Samsel Upper Elementary School in Sayreville, the report said.

But the real question is, why salt water taffy? New Jersey is also home to Mars North America, in Hackettstown, which began more than 50 years ago as the M&M factory. Smarties Candy Company, which is now based in Union after stints in Elizabeth and Bloomfield, has been in New Jersey since 1949.
