'Supernatural' Fans Pay Tribute to Sci-Fi Series

Creation Entertainment holds three-day convention in Parsippany.

Creation Entertainment hosted its 40th anniversary "Supernatural" convention at the this weekend.

The three-day long event, much like its recent "Star Trek" convention, featured stars from the hit TV series, photo ops, karaoke, trivia competitions, costume contests, a dessert party, vendors selling fan merchandise and more for fans of all ages.

The event drew "a couple hundred" on Friday and Saturday, according to Adam Malin, co-founder of Creation Entertainment.

Malin and Gary Berman formed Creation Entertainment in 1971. Since then, the committee has been producing conventions for fans of genre television and film. Other conventions have included "Twilight," "Xena," "Lost" and "The X-Files" alongside their first successful "Star Trek" franchise.

“Most of the properties that we cover are shows that I watch myself and enjoy,” Malin said. “And 'Supernatural' is a great show; we’ve enjoyed it from the beginning. And when all of the staff of the show came on the air, we recognized that it was an exceptional show with great stories and fantastic anchors.”

Creation’s fascination with the show led to a collaboration with the Warner Brothers and CW in efforts to promote the show, by hosting these 'Supernatural' events and creating a lineup of 'Supernatural' merchandise. For approximately five years, Creation Entertainment has gathered fans of the beloved series.

“Being a fan boy like I am, I love the supernatural aspects of the show,” Malin said. “I’m into all the different kind of crazy zombies, demons and mythological creatures that they’ve invoked on the show.”

“I also love the brother relationship between Dean and Sam; the two show protagonists are really fantastic,” he continued. “They have a crew of people that work with them, trying to rid the world of these evil spirits. Great villains that make for great antagonists, great acting, great writing and storytelling—which is central to what a good show should be.”

Being a sci-fi, fantasy-fiction series did not stop the convention from gathering a large number of the female population—making up nearly three-quarters of the attendees.

South Jersey residents Kimberly Clark and daughter, Kayla Hardnack were among the female contingent.

“We spend a lot of family time watching the show together, me and my teenage kids,” Clark said. “I think they’re really good actors. It’s hard because usually I don’t like the same things that my kids like. But the quality of the acting and the script—I’m engaged as well. So I get to spend time with them and be into it.”

Hardnack said it’s her “all-time favorite show.”

“I just think it’s a really different story line. It always keeps you on edge and it’s very exciting,” Hardnack said.

Matt Berman, who has been working as a frequent show manager with Creation Entertainment since 2008, said the convention is a great way to get in touch with "Supernatural" fans.

“I think it’s wonderful,” Berman said. “Fans really appreciate it, we really appreciate the fans. It’s a very good chemistry between the two of us. We represent 'Supernatural' very well and are happy to do so.”

“Sam and Dean are just easy to fall in love with. It ['Supernatural'] has got a great plot line, great character development. Jensen and Jared really bring the two characters to life. They have a great supporting cast around them, Misha’s fantastic as well.”

This weekend’s convention also contributed as a fundraiser to Arts High Foundation, benefiting arts education for high school students in Los Angeles County.

“We have a lot of stuff going on this weekend. A lot of fun, good deeds getting done," Malin said. "Good karma bringing people together and having a great time within the Supernatural fan community."

The convention continues Sunday. For more information, click here.
