Five of the week's top stories

New Hope for Crawford Campaign?: Robert Crawford raised eyebrows around Parsippany when he announced June 13 that he was leaving the Republican Party and accepting the Democratic nomination to run for the unexpired Town Council seat in the Nov. 8 general election. Crawford lost his first bid for the seat in the June 7 GOP primary. In that election, he earned enough Democratic write-in votes to qualify him for that party's nomination. The announcement would have set up a rematch between the former Board of Education member and the man who defeated him, council member Vincent Ferrara.

Not So Fast: The following night, however, the story changed. At a meeting of the Township Council, Town Attorney John Inglesino announced that Crawford could not run for the council seat. Inglesino cited what is known as the "Sore Loser" law, which prohibits a person who has run for municipal office in a primary election from running for that same office in the general election under a different political party. Crawford, in a show of defiance, said he was continuing forward with his campaign.

Contract Controversy Continues: A state appellate the Board of Education's lawsuit against the Christie Administration over Superintendent LeRoy Seitz's contract. President Frank Calabria said the board will go over its options concerning the agreement, which violates the governor's mandated superintendent's salary cap, but will not spend any more taxpayer dollars on the matter. As things stand, at some point, the budget will run out of money to pay the superintendent.

SpringHill Stuites Testimony Continues: The Zoning Board of Adjustment took up the matter of the proposed Glacier Drive and Route 10 this week. Yet again, there was no resolution. Board members heard more testimony from engineers, planners, a landscaper and an architect. The board is expected to make a decision finally when it meets next to discuss the plan on July 6.

RIP Big Man:  New Jersey legend after suffering a stroke last week. Clemons' singular saxophone sound was one of the driving elements of the music of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. His final project was appearing on Lady Gaga's "Edge of Glory." Clemons was 69.
