The Holidays, Cabaret Style, at Parsippany Community Center

Women's Theater Company stages first holiday music program this weekend.

Musicals have proven to be the biggest draw for the since its move several years ago to the Parsippany Playhouse.

Not only have musicals such as “” and “Side by Side by Sondheim” played to full houses in the cozy Parsippany Playhouse, but musical revues have drawn large audiences as well.

So what better time and place for a than this weekend at the home of Parsippany’s only professional resident theater company?

“It’s also a benefit for the theater, and the singers are all very excited about that,” said Lauren Moran Mills, director of the cabaret, which will be offered at 8 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday.

The nine singers are especially happy to spread some holiday cheer at a theater where all of them have found employment in recent years. Most have them have previously conspired with Mills to bring music to life on this stage along with keyboardist Warren Helms and bassist Tim Metz.

“It’s always fun to work there and always great to work with Warren,” said Metz, a Boonton resident and full-time musician.

After working for the WTC on demanding scores for full musicals (referring to the score for the September production of “Romance Romance” as one of the hardest to master), he’s looking forward to a lighter and looser gig.

“ ‘Romance Romance’ was scored for 22 pieces, so that was hard,” he said. “This type of cabaret is looser. And I should get to use my jazz chops more.”

“We asked the singers what they wanted to do,” Mills said. “A lot of them already have something prepared for this sort of thing.”

Mills said there will be time for only one full rehearsal, but some of the cast members are putting in extra work on their own to develop duets. Annette Coviello, who appeared in “The World Goes ’Round,” is planning a duet with Helms on “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” Her mother, Grace Coviello, will step out of her usual stage manager role to duet with Claudia Metz on “Silver Bells,” while Joe Elafante and Kathleen Clancy, who sang together in “Sondheim,” will join on “White Christmas.”

“Grace is singing, so I get to take over the sound and lights for this,” Mills said.

Metz, too, is job-swapping. Normally in charge of the box office, she is making her WTC stage debut.

The cast also includes Marc. C. Dalio, who was just seen in “Romance Romance,” Andrea Helms and Lynn Hart (“Sondheim”) and Stearns Matthews (“Sondheim” and “The World Goes ’Round”).

Patrons also can expect a big group number and, given the intimate setting, will no doubt be called on to sing a bit themselves, at least if the spirit moves them.

The will be presented at 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, and 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, at the P, 1130 Knoll Road, in the Lake Hiawatha section of Parsippany. Tickets are $25 or two for $40. For information, call 973-316-3033 or visit www.womenstheater.org.
