SIGN OF THE TIMES IN PARSIPPANY

Last week with no warning to any of the candidates running for office in Parsippany the yards signs they had placed in a number of places throughout  Parsippany disappeared. As it turned out a seemingly sudden  decision was made in Town Hall that any sign that appeared on town property or property maintained by the Town had to go. So the Department of Forestry and Parks has spent the last couple of days driving round Parsippany picking up signs. To the Department's credit they had not thrown the signs away and candidates have been invited to come by and pick up their signs.
For the past number of election cycles, candidates including those who currently hold office as well as this blogger have placed campaign signs throughout the township without issue. Why the change ordered by Town Hall with three weeks to go before the November 5th election is anyone's guess. Many would argue that less may be more when it comes to the townscape being littered with signs of all sizes and in numbers that defy logic. Others would argue that the campaign sign rules should be defined up front and enforced immediately. Given all that needs to be done to take the politics out and put the pride back in Parsippany, perhaps we could start with the premise that all of the candidates would be willing to sign off on a sign ordinance that is clearly understood, equitably enforced and in effect year round and not just during the political season. Fellow candidates what say you?
