Free Comic Book Day Weekend Hits FunnyBooks

Lake Hiawatha shop celebrates 21st anniversary this spring

You'll get something for nothing this weekend at FunnyBooks Comics and Stuff in Lake Hiawatha.

The almost 21-year-old comic book shop celebrated May 4, the 11th annual Free Comic Book Day, on Saturday—and the fun and giveaways continue Sunday.

Owner Steve Conte—aka Funny Steve—said the shop is geared up to hand out free comic books to everyone who stops by the little red brick comic shop at 98 N. Beverwyck Road.

"This year's free selection is the best we've ever seen," he teased.

The 2013 free comic choices at FunnyBooks include a free Marvel comic starring Thanos (the projected villain for the next Avengers movie), a free DC Comic starring Superman (in time for a new Man of Steel movie this summer) and for the first time ever, a free "The Walking Dead" comic book.

"This one will have fanboys, fangirls and fan-families headed to FunnyBooks like a zombie herd!" added Conte, who said there will be 25 other free titles to choose from including all-ages titles featuring favorites like SpongeBob, the Simpsons, Sonic, the Smurfs and Adventure Time.

Conte said the store also offers super sales this weekend, including deals on graphic novels, back issues and action figures.

"Free Comic Book Day is our chance to introduce even more people of all ages to the amazing variety of stories that are told in the pages of comic books, and to show everyone what FunnyBooks is all about, and why we have been around for over 20 years," he said. "Looks like we will have great weather for the big event, and with 'Iron Man 3' hitting movie theaters this weekend as well, this will be one Comic Book weekend extravaganza!"
