New Pharmacy Ready to Serve Par-Troy Families

New Road Pharmacy held its grand opening Tuesday.

Residents of easternmost Parsippany have a new drug store option: New Road Phamacy and Surgical is open for business and hoping to serve you.

The brand new enterprise opened its doors Tuesday evening with a ribbon cutting ceremony that showed off its bright storefront. On hand for the event were Mayor James Barberio, Parsippany Area Chamber of Commerce President Robert J. Peluso and PACC board members Frank Cahill and Ildiko Peluso, who welcomed proprietors James Kim and Bethany Bui to the township.

Kim told Patch that New Road Pharmacy is a family affair, and by the looks of things, the business is all about families—Kim and Bui, who are married, were supported by the presence of their parents. And the couple's young daughters were on hand as well.

"They're here to work," Bui laughed as the tiny girls played together throughout the store.

Kim talked of his excitement over being able to serve Parsippany's families.

"I've wanted this for quite some time," he said. "To see this come true, it's just great. We live in Denville, so to have our own business and so close to home and in such a great town, we could not be happier."

And he said he was knocked out by the presence of the mayor and the Chamber of Commerce's representatives.

"I want to thank the Parsippany Chamber of Commerce!  Lisa, Robert, Ildiko, Frank, Craig, Ed Lee and the rest of the Chamber has been very supportive," said Kim. "I want to thank the Mayor for taking time out of his busy schedule to participate in the ribbon-cutting!"

New Road Pharmacy is open to customers seven days a week: Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-8 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

Kim generously agreed to sit for our five spotlight questions.

1.  What led you to become a pharmacist, and what's your history in the profession?

I graduated from Rutgers, Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy in 1998 and received a masters of business administration from Rutgers Business School in 2002.  I worked over 14 years at a family-owned retail pharmacy and developed a focus on patient health and patient care.

2.  What's the division of labor like there? What's your wife Bethany's role in the store?

My wife is an amazing woman.  Besides being the foundation at home, she will provide a supporting role while working full-time at A&P Pharmacy in Denville, NJ.  My role will be to make sure that the business flourishes so she can retire early...

3.  How do you and Bethany deal with having a busy 75-hour a week career and two adorable young girls?

Since the pharmacy is so close to home, working 75 hours per week will not be as unbearable.  Since I will be home at a reasonable hour, I can still read to my children and tuck them into bed.  This will allow me to still be a part of them growing up.

4. What will set New Road Pharmacy apart from its local competitors?

What I have discovered practicing over 14 years is that pharmacy is more than just filling prescriptions.  Many times, physicians and pharmacists are to busy to answer the many questions that patients have when they are told that they have a specific condition.  They then turn to friends, families and the internet for answers. When a pharmacist takes the time to counsel a patient about their medications and to educate them about their condition, it makes the experience for the patient more fulfilling.  First, they begin to understand why they are taking their medicine.  They will be better prepared for any side effects and will know what symptoms to look out for.  Finally, they will be in control of their condition as opposed to their condition controlling them.  This can range anywhere from the symptoms of the common cold to more complicated conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, etc.  Making myself available to answer any and all questions will be my primary focus to assist patients with their medical conditions.

5.  Why Parsippany?

When Bethany and I finally made the decision to open our own store, we discovered that the New Road area was an untapped location. That and the proximity to home, the location was too good to pass up.   Then we discovered that the Parsippany Chamber of Commerce, led by President Robert Peluso and all the volunteers, was very supportive of local and new businesses.  It made the process so much easier!
