The fast-growing companies will receive honors at the business publication's 500 - 5,000 conference and awards ceremony, which will be held in Phoenix, Ariz., Oct. 3-5.

This is the sixth year for Inc.'s Top 5,000 ranking of the nation's fastest-growing private companies. The magazine said the list represents the most comprehensive look at the country’s independent entrepreneurs.

"In a stagnant economic environment, median growth rate of 2012 Inc. 500|5000 companies remains an impressive 97 percent," according to an Inc. statement. "The companies on this year’s list report having created over 400,000 jobs in the past three years, and aggregate revenue among the honorees reached $299 billion."

Number one on the list is Unified Payments of North Miami Beach, Fla. Other rapidly growing firms ranked include Yelp, yogurt maker Chobani, Giftcards.com, KIND and hatmaker Tilly’s.

"Now, more than ever, we depend on Inc. 500/5000 companies to spur innovation, provide jobs, and drive the economy forward.  Growth companies, not large corporations, are where the action is,” says Inc. Editor Eric Schurenberg.

Complete results of the Inc. 5000, including company profiles and an interactive database that can be sorted by industry, region, and other criteria, are available at www.inc.com/5000.
