What's Your Stance on Alcohol at the Shop-Rite?

Patch wants to know what you think.

The at 808 Route 46 has undergone a major change that is generating lots of opinions.

The supermarket recently closed its stand-alone liquor store, which was located on the opposite end of Arlington Plaza, and started .

The beer, wine and spirits are displayed in aisles devoted to alcohol-related products, but sale items can be found in various parts of the market (for example, spotlighted wines are in the specialty cheese section).

Security officers are in place at the market and alcohol sales are limited to particular times of the day and restricted to people with scannable state identification cards.

Manager Frank Sblendorio calls the move "an unequivocal success," and some Patch readers said via the Parsippany Patch Facebook page that they agree.

Jeanne Makowski Miller said, "Of course it makes more sense than having to drive across the parking lot just to get to the liquor store. That was plain stupid."

Angela Haviland gave the plan a rave review. "I love this idea, one-stop shopping and a smart move for Shop-Rite!"

And Lisa Falasco Vuolo added that she found the move "long overdue."

But others disagree.

Dawn Sconfienza Gaita shared a comment on our recent article: "I feel the liquor should be in a separate area and not with the groceries. It is setting a poor example for the children. Next they will have displays of condoms and cigarettes next to the beer. Not cool. I was in there Sunday with three young boys, and one saw an attractive bottle of something and said, 'Hey, that looks cool, what is it?' ...[R]eally inappropriate is what it is!"

And Mayor James Barberio, Parsippany Police Chief Anthony DeZenzo and Township Council Vice President Vincent Ferrara have registered their reservations regarding the plan.
