5 Things to Know This Week

Important info for the days following Presidents Day

With Presidents Day past, it's a short work week for some of us and, for others, it brings the start of a 40-day marathon. Here is the scoop on Parsippany-related things you'll need to know to make it to the weekend successfully.

  1. Laissez les bons temps roulez, mes amis: It's Fat Tuesday, your last opportunity to make a little hay before Lent begins Ash Wednesday. That means pancakes. The Parish of St. Ann's Samaritans know the importance of flapjacks on a night such as this. That's why they're inviting the community to a Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper at the church, 781 Smith Road, from 6-8 p.m. The menu offers the breakfast-for-dinner works: pancakes, sausage, juice, coffee, tea and even dessert. Admission is $6 for adults and $2 for kids 10 and under. For tickets, call 973-884-1986.  Another Shrove Tuesday pancake dinner takes place at Parsippany Presbyterian Church, 1675 Route 46. This event is free, and the menu includes pancakes and sausage and breakfast casseroles. For more information on the PPC event, call 973-334-7958.
  2. A more sober holiday religious event starts Ash Wednesday at St. Peter the Apostle ChurchOur Lenten Journey is a series of weekly sessions for those interested in exploring their spirituality during Lent. There are three sessions, Monday 7:30-9 p.m. and Wednesday 9-10:30 a.m. and 7:30-9 p.m. and the first sessions begin this Wednesday. Each session will include Bible reading and reflection, discussions and a review of a part of the Mass. To register, email pacistaro@gmail.com or call the parish office at 973-334-2090. St. Peter's is at 179 Baldwin Road.
  1. Who are you and why are you the way you are? Get insights into the wonder of you Wednesday when the Identity Five Tour comes to Parsippany. The touring workshop coming to the Sheraton Parsippany Hotel exists to empower women to discover their strengths, value, and unique characteristics in order to forge stronger identities. Call it an empowering girls' night out. Tickets are $79 and can be obtained via the Identity Five website. The two-hour event starts at the hotel, 199 Smith Road, at 6:30 p.m.
  2. The civic-minded get a choice on Thursday: The Parsippany Troy-Hills Board of Education gathers for its twice-monthly meeting Thursday at 7 p.m. at Central Middle School, 1620 Route 46. Discussion likely will include the proposed Fields of Dreams turf project, the forthcoming school budget and part two of Superintendent LeRoy Seitz's presentation on student achievement and standardized tests. Also at 7 p.m. Thursday, the township's Municipal Alliance Committee meets to formulate strategies to stop drug and alcohol abuse in Parsippany. The MAC meeting is held at the Police Athletic League Center at 33 Baldwin Road.
  3. And what will the weather hold for all of this? The National Weather Service predicts this week will feature milder temperatures and the chance of precipitation. Highs should hover in the mid-50s to near 60, but rain is expected nearly every day this week, save Saturday. Then, there is a chance for snow showers—go figure—overthe weekend.
