Alcohol Awareness, New Acting Superintendent's 1st BOE Meeting This Week

Lots happening in the township this week

The township focuses today on Alcohol Awareness Month with a special event. The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence of New Jersey presents  a speaker program Monday night allowing an open dialogue between parents, young people and community leaders on alcohol and addiction. Mayor James Barberio will present a proclamation designating April as Alcohol Awareness Month in Parsippany. Also speaking will be Sam Archambault, a recent alum of Parsippany High School who has a compelling story about his victory over addiction. The free public event takes place at 6 p.m. at the Parsippany Police Athletic League, 33 Baldwin Road.

Preschool registration opens Monday for public schools in Parsippany. Registration takes place at three locations: Eastlake School, Lake Hiawatha School and Littleton School. Sessions will be offered from 9—11:30 a.m. for 3-year-olds, from 9-11:30 a.m. at Littleton for 4-year-olds and from noon-3 p.m. for 4-year-olds. Tuition runs $325 per month for five sessions per week and $200 per month for three sessions held Monday, Wednesday and Friday each week. Meanwhile, for parents interested in sending their child to private preschool, The Children's Garden Preschool Open House will be held each Tuesday through June 4 from 10:00 a.m.–12:15 p.m. at the United Methodist Church of Parsippany, 903 S Beverwyck Road. If you are in the job market and having a tough time, there is help available this and every Wednesday: The PSGMC peer support group for job seekers meets at 9:30 a.m. at the Parsippany-Troy Hills Free Public Library at 449 Halsey Road. Come out to hear guest speakers well-versed in all facets of career search and development.

The Parsippany-Troy Hills Board of Education meets Thursday at 7 p.m. at Littleton Elementary School. This will be most residents' first opportunity to meet Acting Superintendent John Fitzsimons. Also expected is clarification regarding unexplained difficulties with the recent agreement struck between the school district and the teachers' union.

Two opportunities to enjoy tasty victuals and good company: American Legion Post 249 sponsors a spaghetti dinner to fund scholarships for deserving Par-Troy high school seniors. The menu includes spaghetti, meatballs, bread and salad. Tickets are $8 per person and available in advance at the Post bar or at the door. Those interested in applying for a scholarship should contact their school guidance counselor. The event starts at 6 p.m. at the legion post, 91 N Beverwyck Road. And the Young Families Group of Adath Shalom presents a "Pot Luck" Shabbat Dinner Friday at 6:30 p.m. at a private home in Randolph.
