Council Sets Agenda, School Board Talks Budget and More This Week

What to expect in the week ahead

Last week, the Parsippany Zoning Board of Adjustment began consideration of a long-underway effort to build affordable housing for veterans at Zandy's Acres on Old Dover Road. Monday, we'll learn more about the project and later in the week hear from the power behind the project, 83-year-old Seymour Zandell. He says he's taken on what could be a herculean task for one reason: "I'm a veteran."

Tuesday brings March's Township Council agenda meeting, in which the panel of five will firm up the work for its March 19 business meeting. The session is open to the public and begins at 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall.

Band students from Littleton Elementary, Brooklawn Middle School, and Parsippany Hills High School will be performing an inter-scholastic band concert Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the high school, 20 Rita Drive. It's what's being called a performance by the Bands of Par-Troy West. As part of the evening, special guest Dr. Peter Boonshaft will present a lecture on music education. Musical selections include music from Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter, and Avatar. Patch plans to be there to share sights and sounds from the event.

The township Board of Education meets again Thursday at its administration building at 292 Parsippany Road. The body is expected to discuss refinements to the preliminary budget it approved last week for the 2013-14 school year, as well as what the ad hoc committee on high school athletic improvements is making. You are welcome to attend and encouraged to take part. The meeting begins with a closed board session at 7 p.m.; the public meeting begins at 7:30 p.m.

Gun violence has been a constant focus of many discussions in Parsippany and the rest of the nation since the tragic Newtown, Conn., shootings late last year. Temple Adath Shalom is taking a spiritual and proactive approach: On Saturday, fifth graders at the congregation's school will lead prayers at the Shabbat morning services asking to stop gun violence and honor the memories of those killed by gunfire. Parsippany Patch hopes to give us a preview of a very personal event that cuts across religions and demographics to touch all of us. This event is free and all are welcome. Adath Shalom is located at 841 Mountain Way in Parsippany. For further information, call 973-539-4440 or send email to office@adathshalom.net.
