Final School Budget Hearing and More This Week

Lots happening in the township this week

Passover begins at sundown Monday to commemorate the events that led to the biblical exodus of Jewish slaves from Egyptian bondage. But the observance begins early at Temple Adath Shalom.  At 6:45 a.m. Monday, the congregation holds a special Siyum Service followed by a festive meal and a telling of the Exodus story of special interest to all first-born children. Passover events will take place at the shul all week long through the 31st.

Tax day, April 15, is getting ever closer. If you live in Parsippany and are a senior citizen or someone who is disabled or with a low income, free tax assistance is available, but time is running out. The service offered Tuesdays ends April 9, so this week's session will be the one before last. Don't miss out—experienced and trained  AARP-IRS Tax Aides will be on hand to help you from 9 a.m. to noon at the Parsippany Community Center, 1130 Knoll Road, Lake Hiawatha. We'll also present an article Tuesday with last-minute info on where to find tax help for everyone else.

The Parsippany Zoning Board of Adjustment recently began consideration of a long-underway effort to build an affordable housing for veterans in transition called Zandy's Acres on Old Dover Road. Wednesday, we'll hear from the power behind the project, 83-year-old Seymour Zandell. He says he's taken on this herculean task for one reason: "I'm a veteran."

The 2013-14 schools budget is the primary focus of Thursday's Board of Education meeting. The gathering, being held at Brooklawn Middle School at 7 p.m., will feature a final public hearing on the $132 million spending plan just in time for the board's deadline to produce a finished document.

Veterans are the focus of a benefit event taking place Friday at Parsippany's American League Parsippanong Post 249. The group will offer an Argyle Fish and Chips Dinner at the lodge, 91 N. Beverwyck Road, at 5 p.m. Tickets are $13 per person. There will be a cash bar, and take-out plates are available. Proceeds benefit the post's work to aid military veterans.
