Flooding Closes Portion of New Road

Vail Road also closed near Montville.

A portion of New Road is expected to be closed throughout much of the weekend as flood waters continued to rise on Friday, officials said.

A part of Vail Road leading into Montville may also be closed until Sunday.

But Eric Hubner, coordinator of the township Office for Emergency Management said he didn't expect any evacuations.

According to Hubner, those areas are prone to flooding because they're at a point where six rivers converge, including the Rockaway River.

The flooding was expected to peak Friday night around 8 p.m., Parsippany Police Sgt. Yvonne Christiano said.

Reshma Patel, who lives in the Partridge Run apartments on New Road, said the rising water had already made it difficult to find a place to park nearby and forced the Rockaway Meadow School bus to park across the street from the apartments.

More than a foot of water had already accumulated in some areas.

According to Christiano, firefighters have had to pump out seven homes where basements and lower floors were flooded as of Friday afternoon.

At Tuesday night's council meeting, Mayor James Barberio said the township was in the process of applying to the FEMA for funds to cope with flooding on New Road, but there had been no word yet on the status of the application.
