Irene: It Isn't Over 'Til It's Over

There is periodic sun in the sky, but that doesn't mean the Irene crisis is over yet.

When the sun appeared overhead along with a hint of cerulean sky, many figured the storm—and with it, the danger—was over. Not so.

The National Weather Service says Parsippany could see more rain today, and Irene's winds continue to blow.

Many township residents still are contending with electric and gas outages. Hundreds have had their basements pumped, with many more to go.

And a good number of the roads closed during the height of the storm early Sunday morning remain closed. That includes several sections of what some consider to be Par-Troy's main drag, Route 46.

Other local streets closed, according to Parsippany Police and the Morris County Office of Emergency Management:

  • South Beverwyck Road at Allen Drive; downed tree
  • Route 46 between Smith Road and Route 80 overpass
  • Route 46 at Vail Road; flooding
  • Route 46 New Road to South Beverwyck; impassable, flooding
  • Route 46 entrance to Route 287; tree down, impassable
  • Route 10 bordering Morris Plains
  • Route 53
  • Beverwyck Road between Cory & Route 202

The case that captured Patch's imagination is the small river at the intersection of Route 46 and Vail Road. The stream is nearly as high as the unpaved ground that runs alongside it—it even has traffic cones floating in it and, thanks to Irene's lingering winds, a strong current.

We knew this tiny body of water would not last, so two Patch photographers chronicled their views of flood shots, including a now-dry section of I-80 and what we'll call Vail Creek at 46.

Enjoy the photos and stay in the house to avoid road closures, downed wires and falling trees.
