Sandy Damages Roof, Closes Lake Hiawatha School

Shelter moved to Littleton School, district closes all schools for a third day on Wednesday.

Tropical Storm Sandy caused significant damage to the roof of Lake Hiawatha School, causing officials to move the town's shelter on Tuesday to Littleton School. All district schools will be closed for a third day on Wednesday.

Board of Education Member Sharif Shamsudin said the roof was hard hit in the area of the new addition to the school. Moisture seeped into several classrooms, including the media center.

School district crews are working on repairs, but it was not immediately known when the school can be re-opened. Lake Hiawatha School has lost power but has lights powered by a backup generator.
