DPW: Roads Still Slippery, Drive With Care

Conditions have improved since this a.m. but crews still salting and scraping the ice.

Main roads in Parsippany have cleared up somewhat since the snow and ice began Monday night, but drivers should still be cautious since icy conditions still linger, said Greg Schneider, township director of the Department of Public Works.

As of late morning Tuesday, trucks were still out scraping and salting the roads.

"It's nasty,'' said Schneider. "We had three or four inches of snow that rather quickly turned to ice. The roads are still slippery,'' he said. "With the temperatures around 31 degrees, the asphalt stays cold and it creates very bad conditions.'

Because packed, plowed snow can be even more treacherous when it ices up, plowing didn't begin this morning until 5 or 6 a.m., said Schneider. Before that, crews were out salting.

Although main roads were better by noon, side roads were still messy and Schneider urged residents to stay off the roads or drive with care if they had to go out.

The icy roads resulted in the   closing on Tuesday.

All branches of the library will also be closed and the Police Athletic Building was scheduled to be closed until  2 p.m. But the Municipal Building will be open regular hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for Morris, Warren and Sussex counties with 3 to 6 inches possible before mixing with and changing to sleet and freezing rain.

The precipitation will changed to all rain during the late morning hours as temperatures hovered around freezing.

Patch will provide updates throughout the storm.
