Vigil Will Remember Boonton Shooting Victim

Forum on domestic violence will take place beforehand at Jam-E-Masjid Islamic Center.

A walk and vigil in remembrance of a woman who was fatally shot on a Boonton street in Agust will follow a forum on domestic violence on Sunday at the 3 p.m. at the Jam-E-Masjid Islamic Center located at 110 Harrison Street in Boonton.

“Boonton was devastated by the murder of our neighbor Nazish Noorani in August,” the Rev. Laurie Wurm, rector of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Boonton, said in a press release sent from the Morris County Prosecutor's office. "Our community needed to do something so the horror of that night won’t have the final word in our town and in this young woman’s life. That’s why our faith communities and civic organizations are responding—so the final word in Boonton can be 'hope.' "

The forum will feature local religious leaders, speakers from Jersey Battered Women’s Shelter, Wafa House, as well as information on domestic violence prevention from Morris County Prosecutor Robert A. Bianchi. Topics such as what people can do when they suspect abuse, how law enforcement can protect victims, how to face certain cultural resistance to action against abuse, and how local domestic violence agencies can assist victims will also be addressed.

Following the forum, community members will meet at the corner of Harrison and Washington Streets in Boonton at 4:45 p.m. to walk to the corner of Cedar and Cornelia Streets where the fatal shooting occurred for a candlelight vigil in honor of Noorani and the more than 40 domestic violence victims each year in New Jersey.

The events are being sponsored by Jam-E-Masjid Islamic Center, the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, Jersey Battered Women’s Services, St. John’s Episcopal Church, Dress for Success, Boonton United Methodist Church and Wafa House. This event is a part of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month which is held each year in October.
