3 Republicans Take Morris County Freeholder Seats

Incumbents Cabana, Mastrangelo returned to county board with running mate Kathy DeFillippo.

Incumbent Morris County Freeholders Doug Cabana and Tom Mastrangelo, along with their running mate, Roxbury Deputy Mayor Kathy DeFillippo, easily won election to the county governing body Tuesday over their Democratic challengers, unofficial results showed.

The results were not a surprise. It has been more than 30 years since Morris County elected a Democrat, according to the Star-Ledger, and one of the Democratic Board of Chosen Freeholders candidates, former Morristown Mayor Donald Cresitello, told the newspaper he wasn't spending or raising money on his campaign, partly because it would be especially difficult to gain traction amid Gov. Chris Christie's popularity.

DeFillipo said in an interview she is thankful to her supporters and her running mates, and looks forward to serving at the county level.

"I have to say I'm delighted," DeFillippo said.

Republicans won across the board at the county level, and the GOP celebrated by watching Gov. Chris Christie's speech televised at the Famished Frog in Morristown.
