Par-Troy Republicans Sweep Mayoral, Council Races

James Barberio re-elected as mayor, while fellow GOP members Robert J. Peluso and Louis A. Valori earn town council seats.

It was all cheers and chants for Mayor Jamie Barberio at Lake Parsippany Club House as the unofficial election results declared him as the winner over challenger Jonathan Nelson.

Here are the unofficial votes for the mayoral race with a total of 11,870 votes:

  • Republican Barberio: 6,544—55.13%—with absentee votes of 349 is 6938
  • Democrat Nelson: 5,304—44.68%—with absentee votes of 910 is 6212
During his speech, Barberio brought up a line that Nelson said during their candidates debate.

"I did not agree with what (Nelson) said. He said that it was a mayor's job to be a cheerleader ... no, the mayor's not a cheerleader, the mayor's a chief executive officer," said Barberio. "The mayor has to make some tough decisions and I will be there to make them."

He added that "the help of everybody won this election ... I won at the polls pretty candidly. When the absentees came in, that reduced it ... I had a 1,400-vote lead and that brought it down to 700."

Supporters for Nelson and council candidates Bob Keller and Mihir Oza were at the Parsippany Elks Club.

"We all feel that Jonathan was the better choice and the better candidate and maybe in the next election people will realize that," Joe Petrosine said.

For township council, Republicans Robert J. Peluso and Louis A. Valori beat out three other candidates for the two seats with three-year terms. Here are the unofficial results, according to the Morris County Board of Elections:
  • Robert "Bob" Keller 4,434 —20.29%
  • Mihir Oza 3,912 —17.90%
  • Robert J. Peluso 6,044 —27.65%
  • Louis A. Valori 5,999 —27.45%
  • Robert Crawford 1,449 —6.63%
"I do want to thank for the voters who did come out and voted for me and want to thank Mr. Valori and Mr. Peluso on their success," Independent Robert Crawford said.

"I want to thank everyone that worked so hard, gave up so much of their time and put their best into it," said said Democrat Robert "Bob" Keller. "Congratulations to the winners and as always, I wish that they would remember that they now represent all the residents of Parsippany, not just the ones that voted for them."

"I honestly think that everyone gave a great effort, all parties. Either way, we won,” said Democrat Mihir Oza. “We had a lot of people come out and vote. We received a lot of bi-partisan support that we didn’t have in the past. That says a lot about the type of town that Parsippany is becoming. This election doesn’t mean that our efforts will go unnoticed. I wish the best of luck to the candidates who received more votes. The issues that they will be tackling deal with both parties. What comforts me is that collectively as a town, we will deal with them. Persistence always overcomes resistance."

Milin Shah was one of the many that crammed into the Lake Parsippany Club House in support of Barberio.

"One of the most important personality traits that I look for in a candidate is the motivation behind running for office and whether or not they love the community," he said. "I've known Mayor Barberio since 2008 and he would give the shirt off his back for Parsippany. He loves this town like it's part of his family."
