Fitness Forum – Choosing a (New) Gym

Once in a motorcycle showroom looking for a helmet I took note of the sign above the many options: “If you have a $10 head, wear a $10 helmet.”  The same principle applies to a gym membership.  Searching for a deal to begin (or continue) your fitness journey is not the best way to support a long-term healthy lifestyle.

Rather, pick the one that’s right for you so that you are more likely to meet your goals.  The key point is “what’s right for you”.   Every health club offers a unique experience.  So it’s up to you to decide what type of experience will best support your efforts in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

The most important elements are convenience and comfort.  The more barriers (distance, traffic, parking, hours, etc) that exist between you and your workout, the less likely you are to meet your health and fitness goals.  If your gym isn’t convenient, it’s going to be difficult to develop and maintain a consistent routine, and you’re sure to find excuses.

Once you find a convenient club, make sure you feel comfortable there.  If you don’t, you won’t go - even if it’s free.  Visit a club during your selection process.  See what the culture is like.  Ask for a free trial.  Get a feel for the club.
