The American Cancer Society of Greater Parsippany’s Relay for Life will take place on May 14th and 15th, 2011 at Veterans Park in Parsippany.  The theme of this year’s 4th Annual Greater Parsippany Relay is Birthdays Around the World.  The fact that the battle against Cancer is being won and more Birthdays are being celebrated will serve as the backdrop for this important community event.

Key additions to this year’s Relay will be the presence of staff from St. Clare’s Health System and Bayada Nurses.  The St. Clare’s contingent will also consist of cancer Survivors that were treated at St. Clare’s.

Relay for Life was started in 1985 by a colorectal surgeon named Dr. Gordy Klatt in Tacoma, Washington.  Dr. Klatt walked and ran for a distance of eighty two miles in twenty four straight hours and got donations from those who wished to join him for a half hour.  The doctor raised $27,000 for the fight against cancer                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            in the inaugural relay and the momentum had begun.

Today the Relay for Life is comprised of teams who wish to celebrate and aid survivors, honor those taken by cancer, and raise funds for cancer research and prevention.  Relay for Life events are held yearly in towns and cities around the U.S. and around the world.   The Teams for the Parsippany Relay will decorate their areas and tents with a Birthday theme from a chosen or assigned country.

The American Cancer Society allocates 93% of all money raised to causes for fighting cancer.  Only 7% of all money raised goes to administrative expenses.   One such cause is Hope House, which finds housing for cancer patients and their family members close to treatment facilities free of charge.
