Golf Outing Tees Off to Benefit Injured Jefferson Marine

Bowling Green Golf Club will host event on Monday, July 14 to raise funds for Sgt. Aaron Alonso.

A golf tournament will be held in July to benefit a U.S. Marine from Lake Hopatcong who lost both of his legs earlier this year in Afghanistan.

The Alonso Strong Benefit committee is sponsoring a golf outing at the Bowling Green Golf Club on Schoolhouse Road in Oak Ridge on Monday, July 14 to benefit Sgt. Aaron Alonso.

The 2006 Jefferson High grad had both of his legs amputated after an improvised explosive device blew up in February while he was on patrol in Nad Ali, Afghanistan.

More than $90,000 has been raised to help pay for Alonso's medical care through a GiveForward page where family members also post updates on his condition.

Alonso, who has been awarded the Purple Heart, was the grand marshal of last weekend's Lake Hopatcong Grand Prix. Alonso started the annual powerboat race through Skype from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., where he continues to recover.

The golf outing will be the latest community effort to help raise funds for Alonso's family.

There will be a shotgun start at 9 a.m. with several foursomes at each tee. The number of golfers who can play is limited to 132. The entry fee is $150 and includes green fees, golf cart, continental breakfast, a box lunch and an awards dinner at the conclusion of play. There will also be prizes awarded and competitive games.

Those interested in playing in the outing can send a check to the Alonso Strong Golf Benefit, c/o 13 Greenwood Drive, Oak Ridge, NJ  07438. For more information, call Jack at 973-697-5957 or Kathy at 973-697-8898. Entry forms are also available.
