Prime Core Habitat of NJ Frontier

Did you know Black Bear in NJ were nearly extinct because of over hunting and lack of enforcement. Right around 1971 Black Bear Hunting was banned because an estimated hunting harvest was predicted to be less than 5-15 bears, all of this low number was expected for the prime core habitat of the northwest corner of the State. It took 33 years for the bear population to sustain another hunting period, limited to the first week in December. Although the population was then  estimated to be 2000 bears of all ages and gender. Bear density in prime core habitat made a miraculous come back thanks to funding from "Defenders of Wildlife" and cooperation of NJ Fish Game & Wildlife. NJ has one of the best prime core habitats in the Middle Atlantic States. Humans and Bears go back in ancient times in many Native Myths we are part of the same family. One myth stems from NJ very Landscapes; The Celestial Bear Comes Down to Earth. The Celestial Bear came down here between the Hudson and Delaware. We know the Celestial Bear as the Big Dipper. These stars tell the story of the sacred bear and the hunter who find him.
