CLEAN UP NORTH BEVERWYCK ROAD PROGRAM A FLOP

Starting on March 1st 2013 an attempted program to address the tremendous amounts of trash and litter constantly present on North Beverwyck was proclaimed by Town officials. From the program flyer, “You are asked not to use the Township furnished containers on the sidewalk for your business or personal trash/garbage ect.”  The street side containers are for the “strolling public”. In addition the flyer states; “You are asked to keep your individual sidewalks and street gutters clean of unsightly trash, cigarettes ect. A daily sweeping, which should take you no more than 10 minutes, should accomplish this. The Notice goes on concerning putting recycles out the evening before or the morning of.

This program is not working; very minor short term outcomes were produced. Municipal cans are still being used for Household and business garbage, including food, recycles in trash bins and trash in recycle bins. Some locations as soon as they are emptied by Municipal Employees become filled again in no time. Having seen local business people myself doing this, it would be in order to use evidence, addressed literature in many cases and other obvious materials easy to link to exact addresses.  Without enforcement, including fines this program will never have effect. This selfish/lazy inconsiderate behavior by residents and business owners costs everyone; in that municipal waste costs for mixed trash has a long term accumulative expense; lost town revenue for recycles and additional costs for tonnage and or volume.

The Municipal Authority need look into and find out; do all businesses and franchises have waste containers of their own? Are they recycling or just throwing everything out? Do all landlords along North Beverwyck provide their tenants with proper waste/recycle cans? Do the tenants understand the rules?

Dunkin Donuts trash is quite common; perhaps their employees should be given a task a cleaning a certain distance surrounding their residence. Signs, stating an anti-litter message could also be displayed. The mall area parking lots from the Lake Hiawatha Post Office to the Town Tavern is also quite littered.

Problems also exist with the municipal workforces whom do not install the trash-bags properly causing litter to spread on the sidewalks and streets. When pulling the improperly fitted trash bags from the fenced bins they scatter debris about. The bins remain dirty and employees don’t clean the trash they just help spread. If the bags do not fit they should not be used, if they do fit they should be installed properly and all litter swept-up as part of duties and responsibilities.  These employees would still have plenty of leisure time on the job.

Perhaps these municipal trash cans should be removed as this convenient resource is being abused and no respect is being shown to the community. Then our Town Employees can police and maintain other places or trashed landscapes about the town.   90% of all trash dumped along North Beverwyck is not from the “strolling public”. In my opinion we Americans no longer know what clean is. Take a look around; the norm is quite disturbing.
