Bria Saunders Wins State Title in Record Setting Fashion

The Red Hawks Track and field bus rolled into Egg Harbor on Friday with a Group Title on their mind and although that goal was not achieved, there were some impressive performances from the Red Hawks.

Let’s start the highlights with our Javelin Throwers.  Dan Campbell threw a mark of 173-6 and finished 7th overall. Which should be good enough for a wildcard for the MOC! On the girls side, super sophomore, Kathryn Campbell threw a personal best of 131-7!  She’s been sensational during the championship portion of the season.  Here’s a link to her Daily Record’s interview - http://www.dailyrecord.com/story/sports/high-school/track/2014/05/31/pope-john-wins-third-straight-group-title/9816853/

On the Track, sophomore sensation Ally Schlosser ran a personal best in the 3200m with a time of 11:35.00 with a 8th  place finish.  Way to go Ally!  In the same heat, Samantha Pignatelli came in 9th in 11:39.47.  In the girls 4x800m relay, the team of Katie Hsu, Jen Mlynar, Christina Fernandez and Ally finished 7th in 9:53.32, just one place shy of an automatic advancement to MOC.  In the final running event for the boys, the 4x400 relay of Christian Hulse-Carr, Josh Crawford, Malik Francis and Lionel Chambers finished 10th in 3:27.58.

In what was her last Group Championship, Bria Saunders continued to impress in the short sprints. For the 3rd consecutive week, Bria has lowered her 100m time while dominating the field with sub 12 performances.  In the 100m final, Bria ran 11.75 a NJ#1 and a Group meet record!  Her time beat the Group II record of 11.85 set in 1999.  Bria followed up that record setting performance with a win in the 200m with a time of 24.54 capturing her 6th State Champion title of her high school career!  Currently Bria holds the fastest time this season in NJ for the 100m (11.75) and 200m (24.05)!  Here’s the Daily record interview of her record setting performance - http://www.dailyrecord.com/story/sports/high-school/track/2014/05/30/saunders-evans-gertler-win-gold-group-championships/9792329/
